Alright the alvcohol is starting to kick in now but before I get carried away I just want to say how refreshing it is to know that we can let in 3 goals a game and still win comfortably. Bviously we don't WANT to let in 3 goals but it's nivce to know the offense is capable of winning games on their pwn.
I'm looking more into the long run, and I'm not really expecting much this season to be honest, but if you want to look at that way, fine. Goaltending is decent, could be better but we have good enough tenders to step it up later on in the year. Our forward group is amazing. Even when they're struggling to score, they're playing outstanding defensively, but yea if they want to go far this season, the D needs improvement fast.
I'm looking at this season....AND the long run. But first things first. I expect a postseason spot and once you get there, roll the dice.
My take on the netminders is that while Thomas was ridiculous last postseason, last several Cup winners for the most part have received very good, but not out of this world goaltending. I mean, I'll put Marty/Hedberg's work to date this season up against Niemi, spring 2010, Fleury '09, or Osgood '08. Regardless, they will have to step it up, as you suggest, in order for NJD to make the postseason and do something, once there.
Bottom line, this is far from a finished product and they will lose games moving forward, of course. But this team clearly is progressing,as the season moves on. Which is a very encouraging sign.
