I don't know if this post will be deleted or not but some people need to pay a bit more attention to this guy, who predicted the Martin firing by Sunday at the latest. He's the one who was feeding info about the Lecavalier trade a couple of years ago, which was confirmed at the time by traditional media...
And yet he just fired someone with a 2million $ early termination clause. Not that it's the same money they'd make from going a few rounds, but some of you need to give up on the whole ' Molson is only after the money' spiel. Molson hasn't done anything to lead us to that conclusion yet.
Hey overlords,....you're barking up the wrong tree! I'm not one of the naysayers who says Molson is cheap. I'm just saying that playoff revenues are huge and Molson profits big time. He doesn't want to give up on a very achievable goal. All owners in the league want a piece of playoff revenue pie.
Wow Ol' Geoffy boy does NOT want to give up that first round playoff revenue.
The next coach needs to be COMPLETELY out of the mold of the last 5 or 6 guys. I know people think we played this run and gun system under Carbonneau, but we absolutely did not. Our forecheck game was **** and we spent 70% of the night running around our own zone. Julien, Therrien, and Vigneault played almost an identical system with Jaques Martin.
It's time for a completely different philosophy, unfortunately with Gainey and Gauthier still around I don't see that happening.

Hartley is a basket case. He would be a disaster as our head coach IMO. Just because we need some emotion doesn't mean we need a psycho. I'll pass.
Maybe we get lucky and Babcock gets fired and comes over. At least he went to McGill and actually implements the puck possession style Montreal is trying to play. No better coach for our team out there IMO. He'd be my top choice to go after.
You guys do realize that the Habs style of play will probably not change at all for the rest of the season... Cunneyworth is not that different than Martin. Real change will come next season IF Habs management decide to hire someone with actual human emotions.

CAN'T AGREE MORE. Strangely, while it was feasable to fire Martin. And while it will still be possible to fire Gauthier....I really have a hard time to see Molson asking Gainey to step down from his consultant job. Though I believe he should. This regime needs to go. Bad.
Problem is that Molson needs somebody to help him hockeywise. We might be overestimating Molson a whole lot here. And to help him take those decisions, he's asking Gainey to do so.
And we never know.....Gainey might have a a change of heart and now believes he can do the job. What if he comes back as GM? Let just hope it doesn't happen, but I have that feeling that Molson believes in Gainey way more than anybody else around him.

If we played a run and gun game with this team we'd give up 5 goals a night.
We need more balance definitely, but going in the opposite direction would be a disaster.
I think that Jacques Martin deserves some criticism for the Habs failing, with his passive coaching style. But I still think management has really let the coach and the fans down. David Fischer. A 1st rd pick for Tanguay, who is let go for nothing. Gomez for Mc Donaugh (and Higgins). Latendresse for Poiliot, who in return is let go for nothing. D'Agostini for a minor-leaguer. Sergei Kostitsyn for no NHL players. Lapierre for nothing. Resigning a seriously injured defenseman long-term, leaving a vacuum in the lineup. Now some of these trades/moves were precipated by Jacques Martin's inability to work with his players (a good coach can conform his system to his players, not trying to make them fit his system, i.e why could Lapierre not be a 4th line centre, top PK guy, when he was a proven talent at that position), but others were simply bad asset management by Gainey/Gauthier...Will be interested to see how the team responds to Cunneyworth as coach. If he can bring a better tempo to this good skating team I think the results will be positive...
A part of me has always hoped that the duo of Muller and Carbonneau would return to coach the Habs, former players who understood the significance of the sweater they donned, righting another past wrong, or wrongs, however I think the Molsons would have to clean house to achieve that. I simply don't see that happening, unless the roof caves in.
I agree with your post.
For the most part, I am happy with the firing. Martin seemed to have lost the team and the system he was playing made us lose more than a few points in the standings. As well, some of his decision making has been suspect. The question is whether or not Cunneyworth will change all that much with the team. Unfortunately, I feel things will be more of the same. We still have a team that is starved for offense, something I believe you cannot teach.
I see the firing as a way for Gauthier to save his job. He may be thinking that RC will give the team the necessary psychological boost to get into the playoffs.
The main problem with the team has been piss poor management and player development. We have let so many assets walk away for nothing and have traded away players for a bag of pucks and jock straps. It is as simple as that. The result has been Carbs and now Martin forced to play defencemen on the fourth line because we have next to no depth.
Luc Gélinas just reported on RDS that Jacques and Gauthier had a huge argument after the Flyers Habs game. People who assisted the argument not surprised about firing.

Hmm wonder if it was about Leblanc playing 1 shift after scoring?
