He's our assistant right now. Well, was.

He also scored 74 points in 71 games for Pittsburgh back in the late 80s.

I don't even care if it's cunneyworth or Humpty dumpty, Jacques martin is gone and next year we'll have a fresh new system (probably offensive) with a fresh new set of coach. Maybe more agressive hockey... Best Christmas gift today!

Gauthier probably on deck. It was a necessary change.

This is great news. Jaques Martin was a strong coach and his commitment to discipline made the Habs a perennial pain in the butt to play against despite seldom having any particular amount of talent to work with.

Unless they choose really well, the Habs just got easier to beat!

Let just say that this firing puts him next in line. That's a start. Personnally though, I would thanks also Gainey for his services as well at the same time.

Time for a complete NEW direction.

The thing I hate about this, is that it was a total waste of time (the Martin experiment)... we missed on Muller or scarface who's now in tempa... bad timing I guess.... But i'm glad Martin is out for good!

I just got on the fire martin bandwagon when they blew the 2-goal lead in the 3rd against the Islanders on Tuesday and let them tie the game 3-3.

I'm really stoked they picked a english interim head coach, it's about ****ing time we broaden our horizons when picking coaches. I want to see something different, I want to see players come here and actually over-achieve. 25 years without a 100 point scorer, FML.

Great start to my weekend. Holy crap.

I expected something was up though. Cancelled practice yesterday for a team meeting at 11? Usually the signs that either a trade or a firing will follow.

I can't believe some people are upset about this. Was Martin the entire problem? No. But he was a big part of it. He needed to go!

You know I hated the martin signing in the first place but really he had to work with the players provided. Gauthier and gainey are the problem. Martin didn't do to bad with the crap he had to work with. The habs just keep making mistake after mistake and it's just gonna continue.....no hope in sight.

I'm glad it's over. Not that I don't respect JM's knowledge, but the guy thinks the game like it's 1990 and he had clearly lost the room, vets weren't pulling for him, it was invitable, you could see it coming miles away. In the circumstances, I think Gauthier's been pretty patient, thought this might have come quite a bit sooner. What this team needs right now is not a new X and O game plan, it's pure motivation and will to play for one another. Hopefully Cunneyworth can spark something positive to salvage this season until a more permanent solution is found.

Well, this was what a lot of people were calling for. I'm just not convinced it was a good idea - especially at this time. I guess there are always things going on behind the scenes that we don't know about, but if Cunneyworth is going to be the interim until the end of the season, why not just keep Martin with the possibility that we'll make the playoffs if the injuries ever stop piling up. Martin's system works relatively well in the playoffs when things tighten up. Then if we still weren't happy, we could fire him in the off-season, hire a new coach and give them a whole training camp to implement a new style.

I'm just not sure what this is supposed to do for the team at this time. But I'm hoping to be proved wrong.

Panther fan who comes in peace. The Habs personnel are not really well suited to Martin's system. But, Martin refuses to adapt. So it was with the Sens, the Cats and apparently now the Habs. Be grateful, he has not been elevated to GM.

Gauthier was never interim GM. He was named as Gainey's full-time replacement when he stepped down.

He never had the "interim" tag.
