There isnt any reason for us to be THAT bad with what we have to work with. Dropping half the team really won't matter.

Isles (20+ years?) and Oilers (5 years now) have been suffering a lot longer than that. No thanks.

My point is I don't want to bottom out.

I want to see the Rochester Core with a new coach first before we get stupid about a long-term rebuild.

You dont HAVE to bottom out. We have enough guys that can be key players here...

Trading Miller, Roy and Stafford isn't going to bottom us out.

I think I'm somewhere between two and three right now.

New coach and move out Roy/Stafford.

EXACTLY! They could move those three, gain the pieces necessary to get a true number one center, and maybe even a number two as well, and rebuild out of that. Keep Vanek and Pominville, they've got the necessary determination IMO to win, and sign a goalie to form a tandem with Enroth in the off-season (Harding or Biron maybe). Within two seasons, we could have a true contender again. Maybe pawn Roy off to Calgary or Washington for draft picks. Stafford to Edmonton for Sam Gagner, and Miller to whoever needs a goalie (Tampa Bay?) for picks/prospects (Brett Connolly and a 1st?).

I would do the Stafford move now, Roy deal whenever but likely after the season is over. And Miller deal at the deadline. Let Enroth take the reins at the end of the season and see what he can do for the last 20 games, since Lindy can't handle goalie changes anyways, we don't need a backup for those last games.

This thread is silly. a and b are not the only options, I don't see how this exercise serves much at all. Hell, theres not even an OUTCOME to our choices that you give us, or even hint at.

There's nothing guranteed in rebuilds and theres nothing guranteed in standing pat. Im bypassing this and making: c) fire Ruff, see how the team reacts to new coach, see how darcy does. Evaluate options again.

it's for pragmatists only...
there's a kool aid thread somewhere around here, it probably hasn't been bumped since the offseason though...

option C was on the table 2 years ago... it's too late now IMO.

I made that argument years ago in the FIRE RUFF threads.... that it was easier to change 1 coach, then get rid of all these guys with 4+ seasons left on their contract... well, that's not the case anymore.

I respect your opinion, I just don't like turning complex situations into either/or questions. If, in my option c, the next evaluation points to rebuilding as being the best option then fine, lets do it. But if all it means is waiting a season and a half with a new coach (assuming ruff was fired today and the new coach got the rest of this season and all of next to show his worth) to make sure we dont have something here that can be remedied thus avoiding a rebuild, well, Im fine with that.
