"Did it for Vancouver"

Canucks’ Burrows gets hate on for Leafs in win

Canucks

TORONTO – The biggest hockey hatred here Saturday night was not broadcaster Ron MacLean towards Vancouver Canuck Alex Burrows. It was Burrows towards the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it showed.

A winger who grew up a Montreal Canadiens' fan who despised the Leafs, Burrows spectacularly set up one goal, then scored the winner as the Canucks did what they always do – beating the Maple Leafs 5-3 to end their 10-day National Hockey League road trip 3-1-1.

The only thing unusual about this Canuck win in Toronto was that it was preceded by MacLean's televised testimony that he was assured Burrows is a decent guy and the CBC commentator doesn't hate the Canucks. A lot of people in Vancouver probably need more convincing after MacLean's recurring criticism about Burrows over the last two years.

But, clearly, Burrows feels at least as strongly towards the Leafs.

In nine games against Toronto in his career, Burrows has 13 points and Vancouver hasn't lost. The Maple Leafs last beat the Canucks in 2003, more than two years before Burrows made his NHL debut for the Canucks.

“Ever since I came in the league, the Leafs have always been the team I hated as a kid,” Burrows said. “For some reason, it feels good to play here. It's a great building and the fans are great. There's a lot of guys and a lot of fans in Vancouver that don't like [Toronto], and that makes this extra special.”...
Any other players out there that hate the Leafs?

Meh that's fine, I actually like it when players play their best vs teams they don't like or have rivalries with.

Burrows feels comfortable playing for a team where it is publicly acceptable to be a diver, heck it makes you a hero; also playing for a city that hates the Leafs for no reason.

Is this really news?

Vancouver has wanted a rivalry with Toronto for so long. No reciprocation yet.

Didn't Burrows say nice things about the Leafs in his post game interview on CBC?

I could care less about the Vancouver Canucks. I was cheering for them last playoffs but now since their incessant fans trolling and ruining their city and now their D-bag players dissing us, I could care less even more now.

Nice try pushing our buttons Burrows, nice try. What weaksauce.

Hard to get a rivalry going when the teams are separated by two timezones, in different conferences, and we play 1-2 times a year.

I don't give a rat's ass about Vancouver.

The article is quite misleading. The author adds his own nonsense about how Ron MacLean hates them, or that Canucks beat Leafs. Both true, but serve the agenda of serving Canucks fans. The article without the quote is quite bad, IMO. Written with an inferiority complex audience in mind.

For the Burrows part though, he acknowledges that he hated Leafs as a kid. Perfectly fine with me. Apart from that, he doesn't really have much to say against the Leafs.

Quote:
“Ever since I came in the league, the Leafs have always been the team I hated as a kid,” Burrows said. “For some reason, it feels good to play here. It's a great building and the fans are great. There's a lot of guys and a lot of fans in Vancouver that don't like [Toronto], and that makes this extra special.”...

Bush league journalism FTW!

And yes, I don't give a damn about what players from a far apart team think of Leafs.

....so Alex Burrows grew up disliking the Leafs, and now that he's in the NHL, he enjoys it when his team beats them.

Burrows' hatred for the Leafs stems from growing up a Habs fan and witnessing that rivarly as a child. When he brings up guys and fans in Vancouver hating Toronto, it seems more like a thing against the city and the Leafs hate stems from that. If Canada were a high school, Toronto and Montreal would be the popular kids that everyone hated because of the attention they got but secretly wished that it was them getting that attention instead.

That's fantastic for you Burrows, maybe if you had dreamed of winning a cup a little harder as a kid you'd have done better against Boston back in June...

he said you guys have a great building and are great fans i dont see how hes a tool for saying that.

Saying he didnt like the leafs is him being honest, what if someone told you not to like Montreal anymore(if thats a team you hate idk). Cant change what a guy grew up liking and not liking.
