Hockey players you've randomly run into?

I work at a Real Canadian Superstore, and today I was stacking apples and I looked over a few aisles ahead and saw this tall dude. I thought he looked familiar but didn't think much of it. He was with two girls and a baby. Later on they were in my section and I thought he looked familiar. So I just asked him, hey are you a hockey player?

And in an accent he goes, "Yeah, I play Marlies".

And so I was like, "Oh yeah, you're Jussi Rynnas!" One of the girls laughed and seemed surprised that I recognized him. I didn't want to bug them after that, cause they were shopping so I just said I'm a fan and that was it. After I thought that only in Toronto would a goalie who's 4th on the depth chart get stopped in public haha.

Before the 'cool story bro's and 'who cares' pour in , I'll say that this story alone may not warrant a thread. I'm sure posters have run into players, probably more notable ones too. So I want to hear which players people have bumped into. I guess coaches and GMs are fair game too.

Met Burkie at the Jays game once. That's about it haha.

That's a nice little story, though.

Edit: Antropov at Sportsvillage in Vaughan, watching his kid play.

Double-edit: I'm acquaintances (as in I went to school or near their school with some OHL boys) who know of my existence . Dan Erlich, Dougie Hamilton, Freddie Hamilton, etc.

used to run into Steve Thomas a lot when I was a kid, played against his son and whatnot. If you are ever at Westwood arena, Wendel often makes appearances coaching his son.

Eric Lindros was waiting in line behind me in London in 1994 at a bank machine, during the work stoppage. Turned around and saw him, and walked by thinking, "that guy looks a lot like Eric Lindros, but, Nah, this guys not very big".

He turned up at our football practice that night. He was taking classes at Western and skating with their hockey team.

Once went to Dwayne Roloson's cottage in Port Dover with a buddy, but he wasn't home.

Know some hockey players personally.

I've met Nazzy, Malhotra, Hammy, Kesler, and Hank.

I went to the draft last year and it's impossible not to run into everybody. Got to meet Burkie, Darren Millard, Kipper, Bobby Mac, Espisito, took the same bus that a lot of the prospects took to the Excel (actually sat next to Larsson). The were 2 that stood out tho, Duthie was makin his rounds at this hotel dressed up like he was goin clubbin for a night and he came right up to me and my buddy and shot the **** with us, super nice guy. Also, after the first round on the bus ride home I sat next to Mike Murphy and Colin Campbell and both were super nice. Talked about what it's like to work for Bettman, how much travel he goes through, surprises in the draft, etc.. I'd suggest to anyone to go to the draft if they can swing it because it's just a really cool atmosphere

Players (who at the time were Leafs):

Met Darcy Tucker and Shayne Corson eating lunch together at a restaurant in a local hockey arena.

Met Eric Lindros in line for getting our skates sharpened at a local hockey arena back when he was with the Leafs. Shook his hand, it was gigantic.

Met Steve Thomas a few times at hockey tournaments that I was in, since his son was very good as well but a few years younger than me. Such a classy man.

Met Doug Gilmour at a charity event, guess it wasn't random, but was still nice since he was there because he wanted to be.

Other NHLers/Prospects:

Met the 2008-2009 London Knights the night they got eliminated from the playoffs. Big names include Tavares, Kadri, John Carlson, Del Zotto, Jared Knight, Zac Rinaldo... partook in some illegal activity with the boys... And met Kadri again after he was drafted by the Leafs, still doing illegal things... then when he finally got called up he quit.

Past NHLers:

Met Bobby Baun and Eddie Shack at my hockey arena in like... 2000 or 2001 signing autographs.

Met Don Cherry at one of my hockey games. I think the Ice Dogs had just played and he came into our dressing room and gave us a pep talk. We were about 15 at the time so it was amazing, especially since I'm a huge fan.

I went to Dan Daoust (ex-Leaf, not sure if spelled correctly) hockey camp one summer, and Wendel Clark showed up and signed some autographs. Also at the camp was Sean Bowen (Joe Bowen's son), so I met Joe a few times, and also played against Sean in many games when I played AA, and his dad (our beloved Joe Bowen) was the loudest, most annoying, most bitter parent in the whole rink. Probably because his son's team was losing.. after all he is a major homer.

Other:

Not me but my dad met Wayne Gretzky on a plane from Toronto to Rino Nevada recently, they were both sitting in first class. My dad said that he was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap obviously trying to be hidden, but my dad noticed since we're big hockey fans. My dad quietly asked him for an autograph or picture for his son (me) since I'm a huge hockey fan, and Gretzky said "when we land", and when the plane landed Gretzky quickly fled the plane. I've never liked Gretzky as much since then.

Glen HEaley, at a Highland games.

Bagpipe Band.

Told me I was "wearing the right head gear" in reference to my LEafs hat.

He did sign it,

Now I hate him. The Anti-Leafs p.o.s.

I was on the same plane as Grabovski heading back to Toronto when he was kicked out of Vancouver for the bar fight, marks still on his face haha. He sat right behind me in the waiting area.

I was shopping in Canadian Tire and JS Giguere with his wife, and children walked by me.

I was walking in downtown Toronto one day and noticed a guy who looked like Toskala walk by me, so ran up to him and said "You Vesa Toskala?" Sure enough it was him and I shook his hand, even though this was after we traded him.

Haven't really bumped into any players but a few weeks ago after that Boston blow out I stopped at a 24 hour Metro after the game near my house to grab a few things. Henny from Leafs TV walked right by me and I wasn't 100% sure it was him at first.

Then when I went to pay for my stuff we were both in the self-checkout and his cell rings. As soon as he started yapping away I knew it was him 100% lol...didn't wanna bug him especially since he was on his phone.

This is hilarious !
My friend's dad met JFJ. And his dad was one of those people who ripped on him all the time. But apparently at that moment he was just humbled and star struck and had a nice conversation about hockey with him.

@AlmightPO: Toskala haha... I wouldn't know what to say. Thanks for trying and good luck in the SM-Liiga next year?

Met Mark Habscheid at the Save on Foods Mem Centre here in Vic, just before the Royals season started. Shook his hand, said good luck this year. Then he wandered out of my life about as quickly as he was in it. These moments are fleeting...

Ran into Joe Sakic, Aaron Miller and Rob Blake when I worked at Starbucks. All class acts.

When I was playing adult rec league hockey, Ray Bourque and Pat Roy were at the rink watching their sons play.

Funny story, our goalie ran in and got his mask, he asks Roy for an autograph.

Our goalie warned Roy that his mask stunk really bad. Roy replied, 'that's ok, my stuff stinks too.'

Roy signed his mask and as he handed it back to him he replied, "Your mask really does stink."

I unknowingly stayed at the same hotel as the Coyotes in Tampa and walked with Shane Doan to the arena, greatest moment ever

I assume the Bruins players were just getting some late night McFlurrys? Cause if the best players of the best team in the league are feasting on McDonalds...
