Hockey Future did our draft preview a couple days ago, not to mention a website design change: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/article...draft-preview/

Quote:
Over the past year, the Los Angeles Kings shifted their philosophy from stockpiling young talent to selling it off for reliable roster players. Heading into the playoffs, the eighth-seeded Kings had bet the farm on what appeared to be a losing proposition. They entered the post-season as a bottom seed whose first pick in the 2012 draft was at 121. That changed, however, as they completed an improbable run to a Stanley Cup championship, which also will likely result in the Columbus Blue Jackets exercising the option to take their 2013 pick. The Kings will now have the final selection in this year's first round as well as six late picks, which they have invested wisely with in recent years.

still really hope we find a way to get a 1st rounder next year. I imagine Lombardi knows next years draft will likely be too good not to have a 1st rounder in, so maybe he can get a deal like Richardson + our 1st for a 1st next year, or our 1st + Hickey etc

TV Question on the Draft

I was setting my DVR for the draft, and it only showed 2 hours being allotted for the first round tomorrow on NBC Sports before switching over to US olympic track and field trials. Same was shown on the schedule at http://http://affiliate.zap2it.com/t...0&stnNum=15952. Is this incorrect? For now, I am just setting my DVR to run overtime.

two hours for one round is pretty generous. Otherwise it becomes absurd.

The other rounds will take place on the NHL network on Saturday. Rounds 2-7.

Don't get me wrong, I like as much awkward James Duthy as much as the next guy...but when they go over two hours on a single round....eek.

I think the first round tends to go to almost 3 hours. There is always some down time with trades taking place and interviews in between picks.

1st round takes more than 2 hours. 5 mins/pick is about right

Direct Message from Aaron Portzline on Twitter regarding our 2012 1st round pick:

No. Indications are they'll take next year's pick, but decision doesn't need to be made until 28th pick.

Not surprised they probably will wait to see if they can make a trade or if some one slips.

The draft will switch to the NHL network at 9 pm EST. You will want to DVR both channels. NBCSN from 7-9 pm EST and NHL network from 9-11 pm EST.

Is anyone else only watching the draft to hear everyone congratulate the LA Kings?

The NHL Network just did a mock draft and had the Kings selecting Dalton Thrower. He looks pretty damn good. Wouldn't mind him if the Kings are to take a dman.

If he's there at #30 and it's unlikely but if he was there I'd love the Kings to get Henrik Samuelsson.

Me!

Also, I believe Messier was the only person to congratulate LA on winning the cup during the awards show.

I still remember saying to you in 2003, "I bet if the Kings miss out on Hugh Jessiman that they'll take Brian Boyle with one of their later first round picks."

Oops.

I won't forget the Red Line Report scouting report on Boyle:
"Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane."

I think we were disappointed that they went the college route with back-to-back picks... thank the hockey Gods the Rangers took Boyle and the Habs took Kostitsyn ahead of the Kings (prior to the draft Kyle Woodlief had written that the Kings liked Jessiman and Kostitsyn).

Not surprising that they wanted a big C then as the Kings made repeated attempts to acquire big bodied centers back then with their failed attempt to acquire Chris Gratton from Tampa Bay (for the same package that was sent to Boston for Stumpel) and then they tried again when Keith Primeau became available in 2000.

Not to mention the David Steckel and Jens Karlsson draft picks a couple years early.

Al Murray ugh.

Thank God it worked with Kopitar. It only took oh... nine years for them to get that one right. Started with Jokinen and Zultek in the first round in '97, ended with Kopitar (and Quick) in 2005. That's a pretty nice parting gift.

While I'm not expecting the first rounder to be used on him, Gemel Smith is the player i think is most likely to be targeted by DL sometime in the draft.

- He's a Canadian forward in the OHL (most of his picks are of Canadian nationality, most are forwards, and the OHL and WHL are his most common league he picks from).

- He participated in the Top prospect tournament (every year, DL has picked at least one player who participated in the Top prospect tournament)

- He plays for Owen Sound, one of DL's major scouting connections
