Is Darryl Sutter A Good Fit for the Kings?

Hey all, wanted to know your thoughts on Sutter replacing Murray as coach. Right now our offense sucks, and there is no creativity on the forecheck or on the offensive side of things. Will Sutter be more of the same if we were to hire him or would he be a vast improvement?

As long as he isn't the GM, he would be good.

Seriously though,I think his time away from the NHL would probably of recharged him, he definitely would make the Kings a hard team to play against.

I think he would make the Kings even better defensively. Offensively I can't see him being a huge help, but maybe that would change from when he was coaching the Flames. I always preferred Dutter as a coach over GM, so I think if the Kings pursued him it might be a good thing for you guys.

Daryl Sutter has a lot of personal challenges and would likely decline any position. As I understand it, he was near retirement before he was asked to step down as Flames GM.

Personally, if offense is your problem, Sutter is not your man.

I don't even know if he would want to come back. Just with the way it ended. He was overburdened and towards the end he just completely fried.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Hell, no.

You'd be better off with someone else if looking for creativity on the offense. Sutter might be able to get some intensity on the forecheck, but not creativity.

Better option would be someone like Jim Playfair, IMO. I think he's with the Coyotes organization now.

This summer, iirc he's an associate coach to Tippett.

Always liked Sutter as a coach. Thought he doffed the wrong hat in Calgary. If he remained coach he'd still be in Calgary.

He got results as a Calgary coach, but not with an offensive minded system

Darryl Sutter is not a good post-lockout coach. He has said it himself and he is right. The Kings would not adapt well to his style imo.

Hes more of a grind/cycle coach, and as said, I think he's officially called it a quits after leaving Calgary.

I was referring to his having success. Darryl only missed the playoffs once as a coach, and that was the season he was brought to Calgary.

Strategy with Darryl was win 2-1 with Kipper in net. It did not work. This will only perpetuate.

Indeed he did have successes in San Jose as well, but what the Kings want is a coach to utilize their offense which Murray couldn't do during his last games as the head coach. Sutter won't be any different

The people trashing Darryl about playing a defense first system need to realize that the Kings have a much better set of forwards that we did under Darryl.

I think Darryl is an effective coach within a 3-4 year period and then his message gets worn out. I think he would do well in LA. Look at the players they have, many are already D. Sutter type of players.

Kopitar (skilled guy, but fantastic defensively in his own end)
Richards (is a Sutter w*t dream)
Stoll (prototypical Sutter player)
Brown (Sutter loves guys like him)
Gagne (would do well in a Sutter system)
Richardson (Sutter player)
Clifford (Sutter player)

Then one guy I could see struggling under Sutter in Penner, however he may actually be able to help him.

I have no doubt that Sutter would do well in LA. He would definitely get that team into the playoffs. They may not be a high flying type of team, but they would have success under him. I think he would do well there.

Lombardi hiring Sutter in San Jose back in ' 97 basically saved his job, maybe he is going to try again.

Yup. Make no mistake, a Sutter team is going to always be defense first but the Kings forwards are far better than anything any Calgary Sutter-coached team had.

He definitely has a shelf-life but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Kings go on a STL/Hitchcock -esque run if he does get hired.

He's one of those coaches you'd want in a certain situation. I wouldn't want him here right now given where we are at in our cycle but I think he's actually a great fit in LA at this point in time.

Do you think he would bring in his own assistants? Who?
