11-12 Minor Signings and Re-Signings (ANA: P.Maroon)
If the numbers are true (year 1 750k and year 2 800k) theres really nothing to hate here. Solid no risk signing. If he can keep his play up, good signing. If he can progress, great signing. If he completely falls off, who cares.
Seriously? I'm not sure I like this. Naybe this'll be the excuse to not make any big changes with the blueline in the off-season. That and. "We can make any moves till we see what our prospects look like in training cammp."

I'm not sure you've liked an Oilers move since I've been on this site.
I like the signing. Potter's been solid in both ends and is the first Oiler with a big shot who has actually been able to get it off in years (Unlike Souray and Foster) on the point. I mean, at one point he was a solid prospect, then he seemed to miss his chance with the Rangers and just disappear off the NHL radar.
Potter has been great in his own end, good on the Powerplay, and just in general a stud. For the cash it is a great deal.
I feel very comfortable with Potter playing top 4 minutes.
If the word has lost all meaning, then ya, totally agree with you. He's been solid, but if he were a "stud" would he be signing a deal for less than 5 mil per, let alone less than 1?
I'm happy if this signing is true, good bottom pair guy with ability to be a trigger man at the point on the PP, but he is most certainly not a top 4 Dman if we want to be a playoff calibre team.

What?
Have we been watching the same player?
He frightens me in the defensive zone... Loses his man quite a bit and has troubles defending on the rush, especially 2 on 1's.
Can't complain considering the price we got him at but I hope he isn't in the plans as a top-6 d man going forward. I don't mind him as a stop-gap depth defenseman or a number 7 but faaarr from top 4.

Very interesting. We've speculated over on HFOil that Renney played a big part in the signing of Potter as he was his coach. Wasn't aware he selected him in the draft as well, it's like his own personal project.
He's been "alright" but I don't like that Tambellini is willing to hand a guy a 2 year deal after just 27 decent games when he's been a career minor leaguer up until this point.

I don't get when people say this kind of stuff. It's not like free agents are going to be lining up to a play for a team in the middle of a rebuild. He is one of the few Oilers defensemen that looks like an NHL caliber player. Outside of Smid, Gilbert, and Whitney (when healthy), the Oilers have looked like a trainwreck. He has been able to fill in nicely as a 2nd pairing guy as needed and is signed for less than $1 million. Edmonton will need to resign at least 2 defenseman already this offseason for the bottom pairing, why not reward one of your players for there good play? This is a low risk signing by a team that isn't near the cap, what's not to like?

Well, the way I see it is I'm ok with it because even if we sign 2 guys this summer AND Whitney is healthy, which would be all of the stars aligning at once, he would probably still be the #6 guy.
Whitney-XXXX
XXXX-Gilbert
Smid-Potter
Peckham
We can then decide if we wanna let Petry develop or if he wins a job then good for him. Guys like Sutton, Pecks, etc. can fight for a depth spot.

There have been stretches this season(and his season has only consisted of 27 games) where he hasn't look like he's belonged in the NHL. Like I said before, he's had a "decent" 27 games this season and he just got rewarded with a 2 year contract. I don't care if the Oilers are in the middle of a rebuild, players don't want to sign here, that our blue line in general is a train wreck or that it's a low risk signing. He's only played 30% of a full season. Why not make sure he can keep it up for a full season? Make sure he isn't over achieving before giving him 1.5M. No offense to Potter but he's a #5 Dman and the fact that a player like him is playing 20 minutes a night for the Oilers is probably part of the problem.
The Potter signing is good to great. Congrats to Potter as he finally made the NHL (and deservedly so) and props to Tambo for not over-paying or over-extending. Can't criticize this signing.
Tom Renney selected Corey Potter when Renney ran the Rangers scouting department from 2000-01 to 2002-03.
When Renney talked about the signing this off-season he had so much praise for this guy. Right then you knew that maybe this was just more than an AHL signing like most thought.
