11-12 Minor Signings and Re-Signings (ANA: P.Maroon)
I don't know that he is any good. Not sure how he did at the Spengler cup this year, but I would've thought if he was NHL calibre that he'd get a contract after that tourney.
Devils sign RW Steve Bernier to a one year, two way contract. He previously had an AHL only contract.
Quote:
Right wing Steve Bernier has joined the team after agreeing to a two-way contract for the NHL minimum of $525,000. He had previously been on an AHL contract with Albany for $105,000. That will continue to be the AHL salary on Bernier’s contract.
Bernier, who has been assigned No. 18, did not have to clear re-entry waivers to be called up because he was on only on an AHL deal previously and never had to clear waivers to be assigned to Albany.
Bernier should be in the NHL. He has the potential to be a good 3rd/4th liner. I have no ideas why players with his size don't hit more and try to play with an edge. He isn't a top 6 forward, to make it in the NHL he'll have to play physical and mean. I guess its hard to do as he was always a scorer at other levels of play.
If Bernier is an ex-Sabre, Trent Hunter is an ex-Devil.
Bernier played 17 games for the Sabres. Trent Hunter never played a game for the Devils. He was acquired and immediately bought out. He was only Devils property for a short time, nothing more. What you're saying doesn't make any sense.
Would've liked to see Bernier back in a Canucks uniform as depth, especially on a league minimum deal like that. Solid pickup for the Devils. He had a pretty abysmal year in Florida, but i was honestly quite surprised it took this long for someone to gamble on giving the guy an NHL deal. He's an NHL player for sure. Isn't a top-6 forward and those expectations have really dogged him it seems. Nor is he a prototypical 4th liner, but he's big, and when motivated he can be a useful contributor in the bottom-6.
Obviously the Caps are heartened by Joel Rechlicz' massive development, and consider him to be a late-bloomer. In only 27 games this year, he has doubled his best points output at any level of hockey so far with 2 points.
OK - maybe Feaster doesn't really know what a rebuild looks like...
So Feaster is not allowed to sign depth? Especially one that has worked his butt off to better refine his game and actually help Abbotsford win this year?
He's done everything the Flames organization asked him asked to do, and he gets rewarded for a contract worth virtually pennies. He gets another NHL shot, which he busted his ass off for.
But of course, if it's not a rebuilding move, it's a terrible decision. Classic HF.

How many younger players are looking for their chance? What about someone like Cory Conacher over in Norfolk? There's a kid who's earned a break somewhere. Again, Feaster has no idea what a rebuild looks like.

What's wrong with Kolanos?
And what makes you think Feaster is in re-build mode? If you actually followed the Flames, they're in a more of a re-tool mode.
Signing Kolanos isn't symbolic for a massive judgement in error or mistaken team identity. It's a depth signing. You know, things that everyone does. Feaster is rewarding players based on merit, and Kolanos has earned his.
What's so wrong with giving Kolanos a chance?
Tim Thomas didn't really get established in the NHL until he was 32. Rafalski until he was 26. Do you think those were bad decisions?

Feaster promised him in the offseason if he worked his ass off and was a leader for the youngsters on the Heat that he would be given a chance at the nhl again. But I guess keeping your word and showing the youth what it takes to make the nhl is a bad idea right?
