Vitale is a family friend. Couldn't be happy for the guy. Last year he said he had no illusions of a career, just wanted to play one game. Well he sure got his wish.

You mean couldn't be happier? I hope?

Love me some Joe Victory by the way.

nope, i actually hate the man. he slept with my girlfriend

Sounds like the Wild signed Nate Prosser to a two year extension. Details will be released later today.

Calgary Flames re-sign Derek Smith, who has been a pleasant surprise this year. Two years, 1-way, worth $775,000. He's basically been Calgary's Corey Potter: a career AHL guy on a 2-way deal who played himself right onto the Flames starting blueline. Smith was scheduled to become an UFA this summer.

I'll merge this into the minor signings later, but if anyone wants to discuss this, I'll leave it open for a couple hours.

He seemed pretty good until he got hurt. Low AAV, can't see it hurting them in anyway

Well Smith played well before injury but he hasn't really done it over any amount of time...

Congrats to Derek. He always played very well offensively and defensively down in Binghamton and for the few games he got up with Ottawa he looked like a solid capable bottom pairing defenseman.

Decent value for an above-average bottom pairing d-man. He even played spot duty in the top 4 without getting killed.

Very happy with this signing. One of the Flames better defensmen before he got injured.

The Sens board ridiculed me when I said the Sens should re-sign him and give a try on the blueline. Touting my own horn. Good for Smith.

At times before his injury, he was our best defenseman on some nights.

Congrats Derek! Just goes to show that you can make the NHL after losing the 'prospect' label because of age (HF must hate that). Really can't wait till he's back in the lineup, he's been that good.

How is a defenseman playing 17 minutes a night at the NHL level a minor signing? Close to top 4 minutes while playing well is a little more than a minor signing.

Other than TJ Brodie, I think he's been the most pleasant surprise on the Flames blueline this year. Makes good puck decisions, solid positional play. Made Babchuk expendable.

Lebda is another marginal player that was totally used incorrectly by Burke and Wilson. I find it interesting how players can look adequate on one team and like AHL players on another but Wilson/Burke are have made some terrible blunders

Good signing.

To be honest I'd forgotten all about him since he's been out a while. But he did play pretty well early in the season.
