11-12 Minor Signings and Re-Signings (ANA: P.Maroon)
How is a defenseman playing 17 minutes a night at the NHL level a minor signing? Close to top 4 minutes while playing well is a little more than a minor signing.
See Potter, Corey. It's Derek Smith. It's not a judgement on him as a player or a person. It's just not a big-name signing that's going to generate much discussion.

Meh, NHL regulars seeing close to top 4 minutes aren't minor signings. A minor signing is an AHL veteran IMO. Potter and Smith are both legitimate NHLers.
Great signing, Smith has been a big surprise this year, providing really steady defense and stepping up immensely when Gio went down. I was expecting his next contract to be over a million per year so 775K is great.

He's not a household name yet, don't get your panties in a knot.
Great bottom pairing guy with the ability to play top-4 minutes. Excellent signing.
What a great deal for Calgary. Smith got better with every game and before going down with an injury, was displaying some offensive brilliance. I'm not just happy with the cap-hit, I like the fact that it's more than one year as well. He has really earned it.
All Flames fans will be happy with re-signing Smith. Every one of them I've talked to loves the guy and he's been a nice surprise for them this year. He earned this extension. It's well-deserved.

Very few people outside of Flames fans know anything about the guy, therefore: minor signing.
Per George Richards, the Florida Panthers have re-signed Tyson Strachan to a one-year extension:

#FlaPanthers sign D Tyson Strachan to one year extension as #Sens come to town
Good depth guy there. He has been playing since we lost Jovo and Kulikov, and he has been quite the surprise. I didnt expect him to have the type of offensive game that he has.

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier today announced that the team has signed forward Phil Varone to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Varone (5’10”, 186 lbs., 12/4/90) currently leads the Rochester Americans (AHL) with 43 points (8+35) and two shorthanded goals in 63 games this season. His 35 assists rank him fourth among all AHL rookies and tie for 15th-most among all skaters. Varone is ranked 12th among AHL rookies in total scoring.

#Isles have agreed to terms with G John Grahame on a deal to run through end of this season. Last played in NHL w/CAR in 07-08 season.
I remember using this thread last year to post "cool" hockey facts from all around the globe.
-Former NHLers Andreas Dackell and Pavel Trnka retired this week.
-Cristobal left his swiss club "Gotteron". To replace him, Gotteron signed Benjamin Conz (aka why isn't he getting drafted). Conz signed a 3 years deal.
-Mike McKenzie announced on his twitter account that he retired. Mike is the son of Bob. The 25 years old played 36 games in the AHL with Charlotte and Houston.
