In 2009 the Wild traded the 12th overall (Calvin de Haan) to the Islanders for 16th overall (Nick Leddy), 77th overall (Matt Hackett), and 182nd overall (Erik Haula).

Oh you mean trading out of the top 5.

I would argue that the 2003 Florida trade down worked in 2003. They had Luongo at the time so Fleury likely wouldn't have been their choice. Is the difference between Eric Staal and Nathan Horton more than the different between a third and a second plus roster player? Had they selected Backes (62nd overall) instead of Meyer with that 55th overall pick, I don't think people would even think about it being a bad trade.

Don't trade it.

If we land top 2, trade down to 3/4 in exchange for the option to swap 1sts in 2013. Draft Murray/Dumba.

Don't trade it. Even for Weber. IF he wants to come here, he can sign a 1 year OS.

It all depends on where the oilers are at the trade deadline. Tambellini came out and said after last year that we would be in position to trade choices rather than accumulate them this year so it is not out of the realm of possibility but it would have to be in a package for a significant player I would guess.

Perhaps we can get Varlamov for the pick?

I'd only trade it in a deal to get Weber that's it. I can't think of one other player i'd part with it for.

Well they didn't change the rules when Pittsburgh, Washington, Chicago, NY Islanders, Florida, etc had multiple lottery pick seasons in a row, so I don't see why they would now.

however, I do believe that if you pick 1st OA in one year that the next year the highest oyu can pick is #5 and that if oyu pick in the top 5 for 2 years in a row that the highest you can pick the following year is 10th. Thus, intnetionally tanking (as some teams have done in the past) won't benefit you and your "rebuild" as much.
Except that I don't think any teams actually tank intentionally. I don't think this system works at all. The current system is there to help the crappy teams, your system would pretty much result in even longer periods of teams being awful.

Expect the Oilers to be annoucing that they are drafting one of

Yakupov
Murray
Grigorenko
I truly don't believe this. They will get a good player with their pick, but not that low enough. Oilers have a great, young team and on the right track. I can see them trading their 1st pick for next year.

Why would they trade it? Their depth will continue to grow. Team is becoming solid

This was said for the last 2 years and at the end the Oilers got the first overall pick.So you saying that the Oilers will not get the first-second overall pick has no merit.

Unless you can see the future, saying that they will has no merit.

The Oilers aren't that bad of a team to get that kind of a pick this year. We'll see when the lottery is finished, then you can tell me I have no merit.

13 losses in their last 18 games says different.

funny how almost everyone avoids the actual questions and says the Oilers wont do it. Thats not the point!

I think the Oilers can get a #1 or #2 defensemen they want from another slumping team. This would be at best a shot in the dark because there are many hot defense prospects in this year's draft.
Would Colorado trade Johnson so soon? Maybe Tampa takes a chance with a new prospect and trade Hedman? Maybe Bouwmeester can have a revival season on another team like Campbell did? Will Carolina resign Pitkanen or can he be part of a deal for EDM first round?

Edmonton would be crazy to trade their first for any package including Bouwmeester. If they want Bouwmeester they could probably offer a middling prospect and a 5th round pick for that contract.

It's not outside the realm of possibility, we could end up drafting first overall again - 13 losses in 18 games now imagine if RNH Eberle and Hall weren't carrying our team right now... Khabibulin is still playing pretty damn good.

Things could get a lot worse.

As down as I can be about the Oilers (who are terrible), I think the only way they end up with the first pick is if they're fifth and win the draft lottery. Even considering the current losing streak, they're just not as bad as NYI, Anaheim, or a couple other teams.

I know many of my Ranger brethren would disagree, but if it were a top 5 pick, I'd move Girardi + depending upon the +. If it were top 3 value might be close as it is to Hall.

Something like:
Girardi + Sauer + Dubi + Rangers 2nd 2012

Want to move Hall now for SOMETHING LIKE that kind of package?
