Former Sharks prospect Coyle leaves BU, heads to Q
Not a Sharks prospect anymore but lots of reports that Charlie Coyle has left BU, rumors are that it's due to academic issues, and will likely join the Sea Dogs of the QMJHL (making them rediculously good) or a very slight chance of joining Houston of the AHL.
HUGE loss for BU, especially after Trevino was kicked off the team. Gotta wonder what this means for Nieto next season as that team was already just OK - they just got a loss worse.
@smclaughlin9 Multiple sources told me yesterday that Coyle was having academic issues and might be academically ineligible next semester.
@chrismpeters Been a rough week for Boston University hockey. Multiple reports of Charlie Coyle heading to St. John of the QMJHL

Mod note - moved all the posts from their separate threads into one.
FWIW, I doubt we'll see Nieto move during the season, but unless BU gets a bunch of recruits/improves (long term), it might be that Nieito leaves for CHL or if undrafted, join the AHL for further development.
I think the most interesting part will be how Nieto plays without Coyle.
He's hurt right now but ya, it'll be interesting to see how he does.
The Sharks usually encourage their college prospects to stay in college, but if BU sucks this year I gotta wonder if they'll talk to him about leaving early (meaning next year) as playing on a bad team could hurt his development.
I know he's no longer our property, but it wasn't that long ago that he was with the team.
His character now has some question marks (effort, commitment). He's obviously a good hockey player, but there are other parts of a good player at the next level.
Did SJ see his grades as warning flags? Did they ignore his school work in high school because he could play hockey?
Personally I don't buy the "academic issues" thing for a second. This has to be about the Trivino incident. Wonder why he chose Saint John instead of going somewhere he could be top dog.

A lot of the time college players end up getting drafted by a CHL team even if it's well known they're going the NCAA route. The teams either hope the player decides to leave (on his own or at the behest of the NHL team that drafts him) or can convince him not to go in the first place.
For example, way back when, the Vancouver Giants held the CHL rights for Jonathan Toews. Nothing ever came of it obviously, but if he had left college, he would've been a Giant.

Yeah, completely blanked on that. Would have been hilarious if Toews had actually ended up playing junior in Vancouver though.
Now, the Wild beat guy is saying the academic report isn't true. (@russostrib)
Coyle has apparently said he left BU to play in the Q so he could concetrate 100% on hockey - if I wanna read between the lines on that, he may have had a hard time balancing hockey and academics.

Edit: I'm not sure i buy this grades excuse... mass exodus at that school coming soon i'd guess.
why doubt that its academic issues? just cause he's a junior pro hockey player doesn't mean he's super smart, lol. hockey smart yes, academically...eh...maybe not so much, lol.

saint john has a great shot at the mem cup. who cares if your top dog, if u can win that. this is his only shot
Bummer for Matt Nieto and the rest of BU to lose both Trivino and Coyle. Rough times, yikes.
Haha, I think he means SJ as in Saint John but yeah whenever I see that abbreviation reading about the CHL, I get mixed up.
lol, that makes sense. I can't remember what the official abbreviation is. It's going to be something like "SJB" though to differentiate from when the Q had teams in St John, Newbrunswick (the Sea Dogs) and St. John's, Newfoundland (the former Fog Devils, since the Montreal Juniors, and after that another location/name I can't remember)
Read an article / interview on Coyle and found it interesting that Saint John didn't actually hold his rights...

On a side note: I found out later in the day that there were four QMJHL teams in pursuit of Coyle's services. I had mistakenly thought that his rights were held by the Sea Dogs but apparently the Victoriaville Tigres, Memorial Cup host Shawinigan Cataractes and the always shopping Quebec Remparts had expressed interest as well.

The abbreviation for the Saint John Sea Dogs is SNB.
I believe the team in St. John's was STJ. That club is now the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. Great uniforms, horrible name. On our show we just call them the "B.B. Armada."
