Caps? Tonic.

The Good -

- Great first period
- Some PP production
- McNabb with his first
- Ellis-Adam-Kassian, especially early
- Miller early
- No injuries? Thank the hockey heavens.

The Bad -

- All sorts of metal. I counted five.
- Gaustad's backhander. Eh.
- PK fell apart on the Ovi goal.

The Ugly -

- The Danes in the second period. Holy crap they are getting run out of the rink.

A win's a win. I don't really have anything for the "Ugly" or even "Bad" without nitpicking.

We'll take it and enjoy it.

G: Not blowing a 4 goal lead in the second period.

Everything else is gravy.

Really great game aside from a few mishaps that costed some goals. Some pretty obvious missed calls.

Was really pleased with the teams return, hope it carries over. Would love to see Myers back in WSH this week.

Didn't see much other than the McNabb goal and Regehr hammering OV into the boards.

OV's late game antics were pathetic. How does going back at Adam even after the original push from behind not get a penalty?

A win...that's all I care about.

The Good:

-1st period. Perfect.
-the EAK line.
-I thought Stafford had a solid game
-Miller, especially early
-PP production
-OV getting introduced to the Tunnel o' Death
-Home win

The Bad:

-So many post toasties...5?!
-Washington's effort for 50 minutes of that game

The Ugly:

-Ovechkin's antics late. Really buddy? At least /pretend/ you're a professional.

Good:

- Regehr (!)
- the Sabres played a great first period
- secondary scoring
- power play
- they won all important faceoffs (that's what I perceived)
- McNabb
- Hecht
- they had the opportunity to score more goals
- Miller

Bad:

- I didn't like their game in the third period
- the coverage of the screening player on Washington's second goal

Ugly:

- Boyes should've scored when he had the opportunity to ice the game

More to add:

G:
Stafford shooting the puck. Team high 4. Fewer pretty passes (except the 1st goal), more north-south get the puck to the net.
Regehr. Really Chain? How do you forget him?
Offensive contributions from the defense. Weber/Sekera each had posts, McNabb/Ehrhoff with goals, overall the D was what we expected--active and in the play
Hecht was awesome today. We miss him.
Faceoffs. Overall 58%, led by Goose (7-2) and Roy (11-6).
Ehrhoff credited with 4 blocked shots.
Miller was good.

Lots to love about this one. Would have been nice to put the icing on the cake with all those posts/missed chances in the 2nd/3rd, but hey, they played well enough to win.

the good
- really loved the 1st period effort from all 4 lines
- creating possession and chances shift after shift
- team effort
- Regehr on Ovi
- start talking Jochen extension

the bad
- McNabb on the shift he ended up taking the high sticking penalty, holy lost batman
- not finishing glorious chances (boyes, stafford, vanek, goose)
- posts

the ugly
- the feeling that they were going to blow it after the 2nd Wash goal

Good:
Balanced defense. Offensive n toughness together. Weber, McNabb & Regher all had hits, cleared the crease and played well.
21 - 9 - 22 had a great game. I liked 21 on the left wing, the were creating chances all night.
I just can't imagine sending Kassian down again.
Miller was good, Ellis played ok, Adam was all over the ice. Solid all around game.

Bad:
Washington goalie in first.

Ugly:
We had one of the best periods played in a long time in the first. Why did Ruff change up lines through the second n thirds? Didn't understand it. Should of kept rolling the same combos as in the first.
My only negative is Kaleta. He's going to cost us bug oneday. We don't need him in this team anylonger with guys like 54 81 6 22 and even 28. He always crosses the line and his penaltys are becoming worrisome. I think it's time to give his spot to Kassian, he brings more to the table.

I didn't see that at all, he kept the same combos. Maybe you caught some weird ones mid-change or post-PP/PK?

Home from the game now, so...

Good:
- Boyes was outstanding, again. Every game I've been to, he's stood out.
- Stafford with more jump
- Love how Hecht carries the puck
- REGEHR
- Loved Sekera's smarts

Bad:
- Looking down for 2 SECONDS and missing the Regehr hit live. I heard it though, loud and clear
- Ovie
- A few too many times the D-man just kept passing the puck back and forth instead of finding a way to move it FORWARD in the d-zone. A few of those led to lost puck posession

Ugly:
- Ovie
- The Jame doppleganger I saw at the game

Hecht makes a huge difference. Having a real NHL player at center on both of our top 2 lines is key. No offense to Chewey, who did some good things, but was horribly out of place.

Hopefully the team will get serious now that Baby Jesus is born, just like last season the love of Baby J inspired the team to play miraculously the rest of the way. And, they are HEALING! Coincidence? Yes, but let's call it a miracle anyways. Cause life is boring without those things.

I agree about Hecht. To start the year, I thought he'd just fade into the sunset this season. I'm rethinking his worth now. He's no offensive stalwart, but there's a huge difference between an AHL or rookie center in the top-6 versus a defensively responsible veteran. He's just so damn smart. And without him...our depth is laughably bad at C.

That back hand by Goose that lead to the 1st goal was pathetic. I've been hearing the number $3 million a season being tossed around after this year. Peace out. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Stafford missed a bit of time at the start of the second. It's why Kassian got a little PP time/Boyes got shifted up to the first unit for a little bit.

And I don't see what Hecht brings that Stoll/Nielsen wouldn't with more consistency and being better at faceoffs. Jochen's gotta be healthy for a playoff series before I'd throw another year at him, much less several.

Their scoring depth was an illusion of an offensive system and GMGM was married to both his core and his prospect pool, so he kept adding mediocre pieces that didn't actually solve the team's problems (BMo, Corvo, Belanger, etc, etc, etc), rather than moving value for value (Carlson for Pronger (imagine 09/10 Ovy/Pronger. Exactly.)). Sergei Fedorov was their best depth center in the past four years. That sums it up right there.

Also, it's amazing how much better Regehr and Leo looked with a little rest. Sekera was great too.

Also, also, I really like how Kassian and Vanek play together. Not worth breaking up Vanek and Poms or anything, but when Jason is tired after a PK, they've been a really solid combination.

The day Paul Gaustad is making $3 million per year to play for the Sabres will be the day I find another team to follow.

Well, as bad as things have been, we can always comfort ourselves that the things in Washington are much worse.
