NHL COO Collins on future of Winter Classic/outdoor games

http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...s-outside.html

CP article. Collins sees more games (perhaps multiple per season), more teams involved including Canadian. Wants to get more of a local vibe to a regional/national/league vibe.

If they decide to regional ones, I would love to see Winnipeg/St.Pauls be allowed to do an annual outdoor game, alternating between Investor's Group Field (opening this summer) and Target Field.

Target Field

Investors Group Field (renderings, will be done for 2012 CFL season)

That being said, I would be cool with Canadian teams getting in on the action, though I'm doubting that NBC would be very interested. Just anything other than repeating the same couple of northeastern teams ad nauseam, please.

Multiple games could be interesting, could perhaps open up some more venues.

Yankee Stadium immediately comes to mind (should they continue their Bowl contract past 2013). Would love to see Rangers-Isles at Yankee Stadium on March 17th one year. Just think of the festivities around that event.

Neutral site games could be interesting as well. Lambeau Field would be fun and historic.

Would love to see a Super Bowl Sunday game as well. Give me something to watch other than six hrs of SB preview shows. NBC could promote the hell out of the game, especially in a year they're broadcasting the SB.

Sigh, the league seems insistant on shooting itself in the foot by over doing this thing. It is a 'special' event because it is rare; if it happens all the time or even 2-3 times per year then the bloom comes off the rose pretty fast. I actually thought Collins was a smarter guy than this. Serves me right for believing that any intelligence is to be found at the NHL head offices.

A Dallas-Minny game up in Minny would be epic. North Stars jerseys, too.

This. These are the kind of things the NHL needs to exploit in these winter classic games.

The novelty of showing big US city teams will wear off.

Very much in favor of this as well.... just have it be the only outdoor game in the year it's held.

That would definitely be a good one. Mile High holds over 76,000 for the Broncos.

The Avs have been down for the past 4-5 years as compared to their level of support back in the Sakic-Forsberg-Roy days, but they HAVE drawn better at the gate each of the last two seasons (including what has been played of this one):
2009-10: 13,947
2010-11: 14,820
2011-12: 15,319 (so far, all attendance numbers from ESPN)

Something like a Winter Classic could be good for the recovery of the Avs in the market. I know a lot of local fans feel ignored and cast aside by ownership as they focus on their many other teams (St Louis Rams, Denver Nuggets, FC Arsenal, Colorado Rapids, Colorado Mammoth). But with the rise of all the young talent on the team a Winter Classic could be just what they need to make a splash and bring themselves back to the forefront of the sports world here in Denver.

Things have changed a lot on the sports landscape since the Avs arrived (the market got three new pro teams in the AFL's Crush [2003-2008], NLL's Mammoth, and MLL's Outlaws; the Rockies became nationally relevant for the first extended stretch from 2007-2010; the Rapids of MLS won their first championship in 2010; the Nuggets have made the playoffs every year since 2003+last year's Carmelo drama; Broncos/Cutler drama, Tebowmania, etc).

Meanwhile, the Avs have gone from selling out every game, contending for Stanley Cups, and winning the division for roughly an entire decade in a row to alternating between lottery picks and very low playoff seeds and spending near the cap floor.

At some point, I'll bet the league will consider multiple games per city, if it's possible to have outdoor rinks there. Why play a game inside a 20,000 seat arena, if you can sell 40-100,000 seats for select games?

I think making the Heritage Classic an annual addition would make sense, I think a Leafs-Habs game from Toronto would be awesome.

The only place they could hold it would be Bmo field and i don't think that would go over well with the hard core soccer fans.

Rogers Centre has a retractable roof and seating for +50K.

I like this idea. More teams get in on the action with new and interesting venues.

Of course it would mean the death of the "one big game" Winter Classic, but I have a feeling ratings will drop every year they have a WC anyway until NBC no longer cares about it because its no longer a new and exciting thing. See the ratings for 24/7 for an example of how little anyone cares about it anymore.

So it's good they're at least thinking of things to do when that time comes.

Lightning and Panthers at the RayJay?!

At the most it would hold 69,000 now woudl there be a great appeal to have games say 5-10 times a year there i can't see it from the teams side or fans as it more or less a indoor stadium and there not going to open the roof so you won't have the winter classic feel.

Who's talking about 5-10 times a year? I just said it would make sense for a Heritage Classic game.

Well some are talking about many times a year as for the Hertiage classic i think it would make more sense to have it at the new Hamilton stadium.

If NBC isn't opposed to having one Canadian team playing against an American team for the Winter Classic, by all means do it. Wild/Jets or Canucks/Blackhawks, for instance. Or even Toronto-Detroit at the Ford Field; the latter combination always seems to bring their respective A games when they play each other.

Also, if back in 2009 the Olympic Stadium (in Montreal) was capable of hosting a Winter/Heritage Classic then one of Toronto or Boston would have been the Habs' opponent.

Was just going to post that link myself. I would love it & it sounds as if it could actually work. Hope Uncle Gary is receptive to the idea if the Panthers bring it to the table.

The only way it could happen would be if it were with the roof closed, which defeats the entire point of the Winter Classic entirely.
