It's pretty hard to peg exactly where he is overall league-wide, cause you can definitely argue he's top 15, but then you look at our team and you can also make a strong argument that's he's our 4th best d-man.

my point was the Canucks have 4 d-men that are all playing near the same level, and they are all playing as though they were in the top 20 in the NHL. A tad optomistic, but you know what I mean ...

Except for the part where he is clearly better than Bieksa, Ballard, Rome, and Alberts.

He's better than Salo, but not quite as steady. Salo is probably low end of what can be expected of Edler in a few seasons (reliable, occasionally great, pretty good at both ends) but Edler has much more talent.

So you have Hamhuis, who is again much steadier but Edler has more talent.

it depends if you want a guy who has the occasional bad game, a lot of pretty solid games, and the occasional game where looks like one of the leagues best or the guy who comes in every night and just does his job. Rarely bad, but rarely spectacular.

Edler had how many smashed fingers in the finals?

and one dman isn't going to win it for you. Pronger was among the best in the league and didn't win a thing until he got to Anaheim.

Edler with Hamhuis' defense is a top-3 defenseman.

Edler as-is is a top-15 defenseman, easily.

Fun fact: In Edler's last 82 regular season games he has 14g, 43a, 57p, +18, 144 hits, 131 blocked shots. What part of that stat line isn't elite? His defense stops him from being a top-5 guy in the league but his all-around game, including his physicality and offensive prowess, easily puts him in the top-15.

Better than him for sure are Chara, Weber, Suter, Lidstrom, Keith, and Pronger (when healthy).

Near him are Seabrook, Enstrom, Girardi, Staal (when healthy), Hamhuis, Doughty, Letang, Yandle, Markov (when healthy), and Karlsson.

This puts him somewhere between 7th and 17th in my books.
I agree with that list for the most part but a few notes...

Pronger - Is he likely to be healthy again? We know he won't be this year and his future is without a doubt a question mark. Even if he comes back, he comes back with a target (given the style he plays, its unlikely he can ever stay healthy).

Lidstrom - He's probably the best all time but he's near retirement.

If you factor in age, Elder is easily a top 10 dman moving forward given he's trending up and some of those better than him are near the end of their career.

edler is our best offensive defenseman.

hamhuis is our best overall d.

but, edler is on his contract year, and how much a D produces has a lot to do with the forwards i think...

i would link the way carter, klatt produced with Sedins with how Ehroff (and maybe edler) produced with Canucks.

It is remarkable that Edler is in the discussion taken his age Take away all D-men considerable older (4 years?) and not many compete with Edler.

Definitely top 20. Debatable top 15. He's in the 12-20 range.

But I don't think it's too big of a stretch to say he's a Top 15 Defensemen.
True but Edler is only reaching his prime in the next few seasons.

He doesn't have the presence of a true number one yet. Other teams don't go into a game thinking that Edler is going to shutdown their best line and dominate the game. He simply isn't there yet but he will be in a few years. Hamhuis plays the tougher minutes and plays them well, he's our best defensemen. Don't be blinded by some hits. I do love Edler's offence though and consider him our 1B.

Every dman outside of Lidstrom seems to have a mean streak. Edler has one on occasion but I want him to be ruthless in the corners and even make the odd questionable hit.

It takes a psycho to be a true number dman or a genius (lidstrom)

I love Hamhuis to bits, he does EVERYTHING right. But the guy doesn't bring his game to the next level in big games like guys like Weber or Keith. Top 10? maybe. Elite #1? not so much.

Edler has shown that he can raise his game to an elite level. He still lacks the consistency though and has parts of his game that he could shore up. It's easy to forget that he's still relatively young so here's hoping that he continues to develop.

I agree with the idea that he's a top ten defenseman in this league, which makes it all the more critical that Gillis either a) signs this guy long term in the near future or b) win with this guy on the team before he moves on, because his stock these past few years has skyrocketed.

I'd gladly pay for a 5.5million dollar cap hit for long term 6 years for Edler.

Best defenceman we've ever drafted. I'm serious. This kid is just coming into his own and will be a top 10 defenceman for years to come.

I believe this 100%. And I think the best is yet to come. He has to be a priority this summer to re-sign and sign early. I would go as high as 6M, but realistically, a Seabrook contract seems like it would get the job done or a $5.5 for 6 is a really nice number too.

Its a bit of a shame some people still don't see him as a #1.

He needs to find more consistency to be in the elite talk IMO. Sometimes he'll put those crazy 6+ hits, multipoint games but some others you don't notice him on the ice. He's coming through so far, though, and if he can keep up his offensive output then he could be in the discussion as soon as next season.

And I'd love to see him locked up long-term. Dump Ballard and sign Edler for a 5-5.5M cap hit over ~6 years. Bam. He doesn't get much attention from the league so I think we can have him below market rate.
