Quote:
DALLAS STARS TRADE NICKLAS GROSSMAN TO PHILADELPHIA;

RECEIVE SECOND-ROUND SELECTION IN 2012 AND THIRD-ROUND PICK IN 2013

Frisco, TX. - Dallas Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk announced today that the club has traded defenseman Nicklas Grossman to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a second-round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (originally Los Angeles' pick) and a third-round selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft (originally Minnesota's pick).

Grossman, 27, has skated in 52 games for the Stars this season, earning five assists and 26 penalty minutes. The 6-4, 230-pound defenseman has played in 333 NHL games scoring three goals and 38 assists for 41 points.

The Dallas Stars play the Calgary Flames tonight at American Airlines Center at 7:30 p.m. CT (TV: FOX Sports Southwest, Radio: 1310 The Ticket).
Description from Dave Brown, the Flyers' Director of Player Personnel:
  • Big guy
  • Solid stay-at-home defenseman
  • Gritty
  • Makes a good first pass
  • Not an offensive player or a powerplay man.
  • Doesn't skate like Coburn but more of a physical body

The Hockey News' assets and flaws:

http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/...layer.cgi?4604

Quote:
ASSETS: Has a great combination of size and poise from the back end. Owns the ability to log important minutes and excel on the penalty kill.

FLAWS: Lacks the skill level to put up good point totals at the highest level. Is somewhat inconsistent in terms of his physical presence on the ice.
  • He will wear number 8.
  • Height: 6' 4"
  • Weight: 230
  • Shoots: Left
  • Born: Jan 22, 1985 (Age 27)
  • Birthplace: Stockholm, Sweden

2011-12 game log: http://stars.nhl.com/club/player.htm...2&view=gamelog

http://www.csnphilly.com/blog/flyers...522&feedID=695

Quote:
“He’s a good, solid defensive-defenseman who can help kill penalties,” said general manager Paul Holmgren. “He’s a guy who can chew up minutes.”

And guard his net.

Grossman is not a scorer – just five assists in 52 games – but he’s already established a career-high this season with 100 blocked shots.

In Dallas, he averaged the third-highest special teams minutes – 2:12 on the penalty kill and 2:13 on the power play. The Flyers need help right now on their PK units, which went into Thursday’s game against Buffalo having yielded nine goals in six games.

“We’ve struggled in a lot of areas lately,” Holmgren said. “That’s certainly –penalty kill – is one of them. Nick has developed over time in Dallas. He’s still a good, young player.

“I think he’s going to give us a boost in our own zone. He makes a good first pass. He’s not a guy who is going to put up a lot of points.”

I had a feeling SOMETHING would happen today. Don't think a 5-6 guy is worth a 2nd and a 3rd, but hey we need someone back there.

Supposidly he has had a pretty bad year so far. In the past he has shown to be a solid player though so hoping he goes back to that form.

Hmm. a 2nd and a 3rd for a 3rd-pairing UFA?

Seems a little steep, but it isn't like that 2nd would have made a difference on this team for years anyway.

For those wondering: 27 years old, 1.625 cap hit, UFA after this year.

Stats since becoming NHL regular:

Hell yes, was asking for this a couple months ago when discussing defenseman with my friend. Then I posted a "value" thread in the trade rumor forums a couple weeks ago. So glad this has happened, I think hes going to be an awesome fit for us. If he ends up playing with Carle this could turn into a 2nd / 3rd pairing

I have no problem with this deal at all.....So far its painless.I guess the big question is the obvious one.....Is Homer done ? or is this just the first salvo to soften up the beaches for the the big move ?

Yeah... Lotta Stars fans surprised they got a second for him. I rather woulda just sent them Wellwood and a fourth.

Solid guy to put with Carle.

Timonen-Coburn
Carle-Grossman
Meszaros-Gustafsson/Bourdon

Just hoping he can get back into form. Seemed to be pretty bad this season. His corsi was worse on his team.

While I wouldn't say "done," I do think this lessens the chance that the L. Schenn for JVR talks get resurrected this season.

I like it, and he is young enough if he works out, could resign him. Replace Carles Off game with a real Def defensemen .

When do third pairing D-men play almost 20 mins a night?

This is a good trade for us, HF always over values draft picks anyway. They weren't even ours to begin with. I really like this trade.

Hope not, going to take a lot more than Grossman to fix this defense. It's a nice start though.

Well, there's the much needed defensive defenseman the club needs and is a crease clearer as well. Hmmm, does this mean this is Carle's new partner or does he play with Meszaros? Interesting, very interesting......

Eh, they need more help than just a big 3rd pairing guy.

I'd hope he plays with stonehand's Carle.
