Based on what? I hardly believe that to be the case. I can't see them getting a free ride next season if we are in the bottom 3 this year.
Based on their own words. You think they can go to the media and spout off about a 4-6 year time frame for the rebuild without having talked it over and gotten affirmation from the owner first?
The only way anything happens is if there is a huge fan upheaval, similar to what happened when curly finally got the hook. Even then changes will probably just consist of canning Renney first, maybe, just maybe sacrificing Tambellini second, and all the while the real culprit in all of this will get a free ride and will probably just assume his old job as gm as if nothing happened.
Have a listen to this and tell me if this guy has a firm grasp on what's what in the hockey world......
- This won't stop until the Oilers can fill every roster position with lottery picks.
Thank god for low standards and the downright obsessive need to have a team full of high draft picks. If there is no improvement with two #1 overalls and Eberle who is equivalent to a high quality lottery pick, why do you think there will be a difference when we have 20 of them?
Three years straight of shooting for the bottom of the barrel... what a joke. Welcome to the never-ending rebuild led by incompetent coaching and incompetent management.
How true, fans sure delude themselves thinking high draft picks will eventually get them a contender. They need to round out the team with cagey veterans a semblance of defense and at least a solid goaltender.
Going 3-9 in the month of December is unacceptable. Someone needs to show some leadership and say this is not acceptable. Is that too much to ask? But of course no one will.
If we keep this up, we will finish with less points than last year, is that part of the plan? To actually get worse?
Im guessing you wont want to touch this subject by the end of the road trip, never mind the end of the season.
Tell you what. Ill make you a one time offer. Concede right now and I will cut the term of punishment in half.
This road trip isn't going well so far... gotta admit that obviously. They showed some resilience against the Nucks but still lost, they could/should have won against Minny but flubbed that one... so many chances to at the very minimum tie that up in the 3rd when they played pretty well. Today against the Isles... Dubnyk sucked in the 1st half of the game and then looked solid in the 3rd but overall the team still can't convert it's chances when they have them... posts-a-plenty once again.
Honestly I think the team will do better as the season progresses but ya 90 points might be a "little" optimistic. I made the bets more than anything because I was tired of seeing so much negativity and wanted to put a little fricken optimism up in this place. If I lose all the bets so be it. I'll stick with my Pollyanna pov that they have a shot at a good second half. 80-90 pts isn't out of the question if they get on a solid roll. I'll take my lumps in full if I'm wrong.

I would change your name to Lumpy right now. I think the Oilers will be at best .500 rest of the way so that would give them 77 points. We have Goaltending and defence issues that wont correct themselves.

Toss in a group of veteran ``leaders`` that appear to be disinterested in hockey and you have a a recipe for a road trip from hell.

This is year 3 of the rebuild. Year 4 is next year. So obviously that means that they expect improvement in year 4 because you don't go from dead last to SC winners in one offseason.

Isn't Horcoff supposed to be a "cagey veteran"? How about Smyth? Sutton? Belanger? We need more high end skill and a bunch of guys that will bleed for their team and play hard every night, ie. more Ryan Jones types. Building the core is harder to do than building around them. You don't trade for Hall's, RNH's, and Eberle's, you've got to draft them yourself. Another good draft and our cupboard will be full. Then in '12-13 we could look at trading picks for vets, maybe not our 1st, but our 2nd/Anaheim's 2nd, etc.

I hate watching them loose too, this is the best however for the long term. I do agree after this year I will be looking for steady improvement.
Sure you will.
Anyway, I hate this thread. I've watched and loved the Oilers for 25+ years but I'm getting perilously close to cutting the cord. I know that I'll be labelled as a "fair weather" or lousy fan for saying this but whatever; I don't give a ****. Playoffs were always a looooooooong shot in 2011/2012 but what's happening this year is inexcusable and shouldn't be condoned or accepted.
How about those Ottawa Senators, eh? Weren't they supposed to finish last?

And that's what has me so bloody angry. I don't care that they're still on the outside looking in at the playoffs... this is unacceptable.

Honestly you've waited through this much crap, you may as well wait another 9 months or so because things SHOULD be getting better by next season.

This is 100% completely incorrect. Lowe was praised for many years as GM.
A top line of three consecutive first overall draft picks. lol.
I guess I'm OK with getting the first overall again, but only if Hemsky and some other players are sent away for enough draft picks to also snag Ryan Murray and Frk.

This is year two of the rebuild, unless you think Khabibulin and Heatley were part of the rebuild. So only three more years to go. After this one.
I have the feeling that Tambellini and Lowe, as well as the Oilers fans who have bought into the propaganda of this perpetual rebuild view 5 point improvements season over season as "improvement"... so, going by that I suppose we only have to wait 5 or 6 more years before there is actually any tangible improvement.

Well said.
I wasn't expecting playoffs this year. I wasn't even really expecting meaningful games in late-March/April.
What I was expecting was competitive fire. What I was expecting was tangible evidence that this franchise is turning a corner, away from the last five seasons of complete failure and on the road to a new era. What I was expecting was a sense of hope that things are finally changing.
Instead, what we've seen is simply a continuation of the last five seasons - accepting losses, justifying failures, and a completely emotionless and passionless team essentially on a nightly basis. Our best players every single night can't drink in the United States.
Do we ever outshoot, outhustle, outhit or outwork our opponents? Ever? I'm asking seriously. We lose on literally every metric in hockey games.
Failure and losing is this team's identity. No amount of ZOMG totally awsome!!!!1 draft picks are going to change an organization that has decayed to this point.
I don't think I could ever stop cheering for the Oilers, but I think I'm going to have to start cheering for something else.
Very clearly, cheering for wins isn't working out.
Eberle/RNH have provided for some excitement, but no human being can possibly sustain positivity and productivity when they are bombarded with constant suckage everywhere they turn. RNH is already hitting a wall, I expect Eberle to follow suit soon. No disrespect to those players at all, but they just are at complete odds with the identity of this franchise - they want to win and they expect to. Hall isn't getting the coaching or leadership he needs to hit the next level. I'm supremely confident the black hole of suck will soon swallow these three players.
At this point, I'm thinking nothing short of a purge of every front office stooge and tainted veteran will fix this mess. Cut ties with everyone who has contributed to creating the identity of this team. That means literally everyone in management and coaching. A complete overhaul. Nobody who has set foot in Oilers HQ during the last 10 years should be allowed within a country mile of this franchise.
You know, I used to believe in this rebuild. I used to believe the simple formula of compiling high-end draft picks leads to Stanley Cups actually worked. But there are lasting, damning effects that constant failure has on a franchise, and we're witnessing it first hand.
Losing is what we've become. It's who we are. We've justified losing. We've accepted it. Once you've done that .... well, I don't know how that ends ....
How soon we forget the team was doing massively well in the first 15 games. Seems the other teams now have a read on how to defeat the Oilers. Either that or injuries and tiredness of the vets have let the team down.
Only a handful of players produce. They all try but hopefully the team gets some breaks and wins a few before it's all over.
