Just answered my own question, it was Giants-Saints, so it was one of the worst matchups to compete with. I'd say TBL/MIN getting that many viewers is pretty impressive in context.

Yeah, I'd agree.

Detroit-Toronto wouldn't be bad.

Honestly, the west is kinda screwed for winter classics. I mean look:

Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Winnipeg are all out for hosting because of ratings.

Anaheim, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Nashville, and probably San Jose are out because of weather.

Colorado, St Louis, Minnesota, and Columbus...just don't see them being national draws.

Chicago just hosted. Detroit is logical to host, even if it's the same NBC team over and over again.

Detroit hosting Colorado wouldn't be bad at all if it were 2001 and not 2013.

I think it's Detroit-Toronto this year (satisfy the Canadians) and then Minnesota-Chicago the year after.

Except I don't see it being in the "West" two years in a row...

Apparently after last night's winter classic, Bettman was on some radio show and they talked about upcoming winter classics and said that the West Coast and Florida would never get Winter Classics and that possible upcoming destinations included Colorado and Minnesota(among others out east).

And apparently Washington is not getting a Winter classic this year or next, according to the same radio show.

Canadians weren't mentioned at all, so that goes along with the thought that NBC wants American teams and American teams only.

Someone was talking about it on the main board.

I feel like we're mentioned because it makes sense and placates the fans. It's too bad no one will spend the money to create a college/HS event for a couple weeks like Boston or Cleveland have done.

That's the thing that I've always understood about the "Winter Classic". It is a US Team only scenario, always will be...

Hell, HNIC gets roughly 2.5 million Canadian viewers each week. The WC is lucky to get that...

So if you discount the warm weather teams, the only viable markets From the West are; Colorado, Minnesota, St. Louis, Chicago, Nashville, Columbus, Detroit.

I'd be completely surprised if the likes of a Nashville, Columbus or St. Louis got one before Minnesota or Colorado...

Chicago @ Minnesota would only make any sense a couple of years down the road...

btw; I'd love to have a Winter Classic. Don't think that I'm saying we *shouldn't* have one. I am attempting to voice a perspective from the business side of things...

Colorado is going to be slightly effed on getting a WC with the new division layout...

Then again, Maybe they are thinking about doing a "double header" in a few years? /shrug

To hit on what Bozak said:

1) Anything Canada is already out. They have the Heritage Classic for that specific reason now

2) It is going to go to big name draws plain and simple. Next year I would almost bank on it being in Detroit and Detroit most likely playing either Colorado or someone from the East Coast just to get the draw from them. The Big House would most likely house it and as we saw last year with MSU v UM, they filled that sucker up.

3) If we get it, I would assume 100% that it would be Chicago and they'll gauge next year if there is enough "heat" between the two teams to attract it. I think we play Chicago on NBC this year too....

All I care is this. SCREW the Winter Classic and why can't we just do our own on Hockey Day in Minnesota instead?? Why does it have to be on New Years for us to be able to play an outdoor game? Just because the league wants it on that day and have it on NBC? Why can't we have one and just have it on VS or FSN? Who cares what the league wants.

2011; Capitals @ Penguins = ?

2013: Detroit Hosts
2014; New York Hosts, but who is the guest? (Buffalo?)
2015; Washington Hosts, but who is the guest?
2016; Guest in 2013 hosts or new match up entirely.

I would bet that if Crosby doesn't retire, the Penguins are the guests again in the near future.

If the pattern is that the guests eventually host a Winter Classic, I'm betting that we have a few years left before we get one. Hope that we are the guests at Detroit for 2013 and that the new divisions respark a rivalry.

I'd be happy with a 2016 hosting. Hopefully we make the playoffs in the intervening years developing some serious hate toward chicago or detroit. Minnesota will get one probably in three or four years.

I would love for it to be Minnesota next year but i think i have to put my money down on Detroit hosting it at the big house. I think they will end up playing Chicago in all honesty it was a petty good game till Christoball "the empty net" Huet showed up and ruined it.

I would also love for a Detroit @ Minnesota game.

I was thinking while dropping one of the biggest deuces in my history today, and realized that next winter classic is obviously going to be Detroit at home. Minnesota is not going to be the visiting team.

However, the year after...have New York Rangers host...against Minnesota.

I was looking at their roster during 24/7 the other day and they have like 4-5 Minnesotans on their team. Throw in the fact that Gabby was our franchise player for years, and they have a legitimate storyline to set up, IMO. That sets up for Minnesota to host it 2-3 years after that.

Not saying it'll happen, but I think it could be a possibility.

They'll give it to Jersey first. More hatred and rivalry

The West Coast and Florida dont need Winter Classics cause they get all the ****ing Superbowls.

I want to see a cold as balls, frozen **** superbowl in a cold weather city with an open air stadium sometime.

I wish I had been born earlier and had gotten to see the Vikings play at the old met.

Neither the Isles nor Devils will be in the WC unless they turn things around in attendance and on the ice. NBC only wants good/decent teams that are going to draw an audience. The Devs and Isles sit near the bottom of attendance standings.

New York is getting the Super Bowl in 2014 or 2015 so you'll get your wish.

and having to deal with no Parise as well as financial instability makes that just a bad place to go.

NYR vs PIT/PHI/BOS could be what happens in couple of years.

I probably would, but again, the NHL Winter Classic will more than likely not introduce a Canadian team into the mix.

Is it right?

Not really.

Is it a reality?

Yup.
