I agree, I'd say he's a great number 3. On a strong team he's a 2nd pairing defenseman. He certainly isn't a number 1 blueliner. He's good at what he does but let's not pretend that he's more than a defensive specialist with on ice leadership qualities.

I like the guy a lot but some people are overrating him.

Don't get me wrong, we all love Gorges, but you don't give that kind of money to a team where everybody is mediocre. You don't give the red carpet to Réjan Houle. A team with already enormous contracts.

I love the player, I love the length of the contract but I don't like the money. I'm surprised we couldn't sign him for cheaper considering that:

-He's unidimensional and brings very little offensively and is not physical
-It's a long-term contract that shows the team thinks highly of him but most importantly it equals job security. Depth players love those kind of contracts and usually accept a little less money per year for more years.

3.9M is the kind of money I would give to Gorges if he had something more than just good defense. Like a Josh Gorges with Emelin's physicality.

What a bunch of idiots are running this club. We're stuck with another big contract after Kaberle. A team full of average players for big dollars.

This proves to me that Gauthier is still in full control and he's not ready to leave soon. If you're the owner you don't allow this to happen if you're willing to spend this kind of money and you have great confidence in your GM.

Gauthier is worst than Peanut.
That's exactly what we are a team full of very average players with superstar like contracts.

#3 defenseman don't play on the third pairing. Guys like Meszaros and Beauchemin are making this sort of money as #3's and they were paid when the cap was still 50 million. 3.9 now is not the same as 3.9 in 2009.

You still find a way to cry after the organization while Gorges is still our best d at the moment. I think that some of you have not watched him play during the last three years. He have done a pretty good job, he blocks more shots than anybody on this team (first in the NHL ), he always gives his 100% when he's on the ice and he doesn't hesitate to defend his teammates.

Maybe Josh is not an offensive D, but Subban, Kaberle and Markov are there. 3.9M? Great deal. Look at how Komisarek had with the Leafs and Wisniewski with the Jackets. And some of you still think that no team would have offered more than 3.9M?

But your perception is based on what others make. Four million for a defensive D is quite a lot. Someone that plays in a way that we won't know if he will stay healthy in the next few years. On a team with already too big contracts. If anything we needed to SHED salaries not add to our enourmous team salary structure.

Doesn't mean it's right. Ont est pris à la gorge with all those big contracts already. It's like a soldier on a battlefield who has trouble moving because of the stuff on his back and he wants to advance more and the idea of his General is to put even more stuff on his back.

Okay, it's quite a lot, but would you take the risk of losing him at the end of the season? It's a good decision of signing him right now.

Just for fun, were you happy when Markov signed with the Habs last summer? Because we all know that Markov will stay healthy for the next few years...

Markov got too much. But I probably would have given Gorges more than one year last summer. Because they gave him only one year, they were stuck to overpay with this contract.

You have to have the talent to go with the heart and desire to win, Subban has that.
Bringning leadership and heart alone is not enough.
I don't know how someone could pick Gorges over Subban that's nuts.
There's a huge difference between Gill and Gorges. Gill should not be on the team because he's not that good at ES, where the majority of the game is played.

Gorges is an excellent PK'er. He's got a great breakout pass. He makes smart decisions. And he's excellent defensively. Gill has one of those things.

As for picking one or the other (Subban or Gorges), it would depend on the offers.

If I got offered, let's say, Brown + Voyonov for Subban and Jason Blake for Gorges. I trade Subban over Gorges every time. Brown, Voyonov, and Gorges > Subban and Blake.

It would depend on the difference in the quality of the trade. If the trade was similar, it would depend on how the rest of my team looked - and right now, I'd keep Gorges because we have enough puck moving defenseman (even if they aren't on PK's level). A lot more than we do guys who can shut teams down like Gorges can.

I love gorges and all but please stop saying "great signing". 3.9 is a little much for that term. I don't mind per se because of Quebec taxes and all, it happens but 3.9 is fair or acceptable, at best it's "good", it is not "great". Great is 3 million.

i cant believe people are unhappy with the $ amount....there are plently of comparable d-men making making around $4 million, playing in provinces/states with much much lower taxes...not to mention Gorges would easily get ~$4 mil on the open market so this is a fair deal as far as i'm concerned. the contract takes him through the average "prime years" for an NHL defenseman..

sure he's not a top-pairing D, but he's very good number 3 and is getting paid like one. don't see the problem here.

Huh? You don't need to be the best d-man in the game like shea weber to get a 6 year deal. Ohlund has 7, komisarek has 5, gilbert has 6, hainsey has 5, Redden has 6, hamhuis has 6 (infact I consider hamhuis as a great comparable to gorges), volchenkov has 6, Ballard has 6, Orpik has 6, Schultz has 6.

And to dismiss gorges as nothing but an average player is pretty harsh imo. You dont have to score 45 points as a d-man to be an above average hockey player.
