Agree 100%. Six years is just way too much. I would not have gone more than three. As usual, people overate our players. He´s a good 5-6 defensman but contrary to what some people may want to beleive, he is not a top 4. He is a top four by default because the rest of our defense is hurt or garbage (not saying Subban is not a top four, but we have to admit he has been pretty bad this year). For all is heart and class, he is not physical nor offensive and with his size, he will eventually break down. I predict by year three he will have physically deteriorated to the point where his contract will be another albatross to add to the Habs overgrowing collection.
You are star deprived or play the game like its a video game.
Find me 5-6 defenseman who log 22 minutes a night and still manage to be a plus player. You can say its by default but he is doing it. Its not ideal but he is doing it.
Essentially Gorges is a 2nd pairing defenseman having to play as a first pairing defenseman.
I don't like the 6 year deal. What did he want 5 mill for 3 years or did the organization just wanted a 6 year deal. 3-3.5 for 5 years would have been sufficient for a stay home defensmen with zero offense.
People are upset because their assesment of what he brings to the team is different than yours. I for one believe he is not that important to the team. In my head he is a faster Hal Gill without the size... I was thinking Emelin would be Gorges replacement.
So if you had your way Price would be gone because he sucks and Gorges also because he isn't important to the Habs..
Most of the people I see whining here are the same who were whining in the PGT after the Tampa game about Price.. I'm starting to think there's no pleasing these people no matter what the Habs do..
LOL yeah it was Price's fault we didn't win 1-0 and he has to play every single game
Players like Gorges, Price, Subban (who are all friends too) are needed for building a winner. People should be ecstatic we got this deal done. It's a fair price too.
This team can't finish, I think it's a combination of the players and coaching. Defensively we could be better but we're making due with what we've got. I think we need an offensive shake up trade. Doesn't have to be Cammy/Gio but personally I think a Gio trade could be possible. If we could get a player of size and similar production in return, maybe even someone having a bad season. Umberger or somebody like that. A shakeup could be all we need. Guys like Cole can obviously stick around, same with Pacioretty, Eller and Plekanec. That Desharnais guy isn't too bad either
A shakeup could be all we need, though I wouldn't at all mind tanking and getting a big time pick.
actually alot of reasons, josh earned the deal ( 6 years AAV $3.9 million), blocked shots leader, glue guy in the room, plays hurt, make no negative noise, respected around the league, should and could be team captain
more importantly, a philosophical shift in signing players mid season, sure Gauthier has made mistakes but signing josh at this time for that term for that price is not one of them, it also gives us hope that guys like price, eller, patches, PK and others will get signed before too much water is under the bridges and agents get them to test UFA opportunities
LOVE LOVE LOVE the deal, really happy, go and deal some of the vets who have underperformed, lock up the young core and let Trevor Timmins and his staff add a couple more pieces to the likes of tinordi, prybil, gallagher, beaulieu, leblanc, bournival and maybe kristo
It's a little rich and a little long but not the worst contract handed out by the Canadiens. I think it means some of the other big contracts are now in jeopardy and may not fit into the long term structure of the team. (Gomez, Karbele, etc)
Did i read that right? Hamrlik was gassed because he had to everything because Gorges and Gill were also playing defense?
Gorges has been logging 20-22 minutes a night for approximately 3 years now. How much more do you want him to be doing to not make Hamrlik gassed? Thats laughable.
Gorges is in the same boat as Hammer is. He is perfectly suited for what he is doing however Montreal lacks the true 1-2 stud on defense who can play 25 minutes against top lines. Thats an organization fault not a player fault.
AKA, this year's team was built to have a healthy Markov in the lineup and he isn't. Unlike last season's which had sufficent depth to get around it (Hamrlik, Gorges and Subban the first half, Hamrlik, Wisniewski and Subban the second). They've been playing 3rd pairing guys as 2nd pairings all season because they seemed to think there would be a stud defenseman to carry them.
They gambled on that and lost and its the biggest reason they've fallen apart.
i don't think he has zilch to offer offensively. i know tons of D can score in juniors and whatever and make it as stay at home guys, but i've theorized once last year that maybe now that he's solid defensively and has rounded out that important aspect of his position, i got a feeling he may try to work on his shooting and offensive capabilities. he strikes me as a guy who doesn't see a need to limit himself in what he can accomplish. he won't be some kinna powerhouse in the pts dept., but i think he is trying to contribute more solidely on O. not that he would stop refining his defensive game, but practicing new things too. his shots used to looks a bit quicker than gill's, but maybe it's me, i thought i've been seeing some decent slappers and smart shot/passes into traffic. i haven't checked previous stats, but he seems to have more points than before.
and i too, echo the sentiment that maybe with the 6yrs and how ironman awesome he is, they are grooming him for captaincy.

Yeah, call me crazy, but w´ll see who has the last laugh when he´s worn out by year three of his contract. Oh but wait, he is a great leader and great in the dressing room! See Gomez, Scott.
We will see. Obviously you arent a habs fan as a habs fan wouldnt say, "see who has the last laugh." A habs fan would be wanting him to sustain what he has been doing for three years now over the course of the contract, not hoping for him to fail to have the last laugh. You are clearly a troll.
