TSN Coverage and Ratings

TSN has bumped up the coverage this year - I have never seen so many games. I LOVE IT!!!

I feel that while Ray Ferraro will never be as good as Pierre McGuire, he has done a fine job.

What does everyone think about the extra coverage???

Anyone have any idea what the ratings have been like?

Extra coverage is good, that's how we get to see games like the Czech/US and Russia/Sweden and other round robin 'classics' that would otherwise go unseen.

As for ratings, I imagine they're lower than last year or the year before with the Canada blowouts and a rather meaningless NYE game going against HNIC. Just a guess of course.

I think it may be a logistics thing.

This year's games are being broadcast from two NHL arenas fully equipped for this kind of stuff and extremely close to TSN HQ.

Next year, it will be in Russia, I don't know how much flexibility TSN will have with showing non-Canada games from way the hell over there both technology and financial-wise.

As far as ratings themselves go, given the timeline of the tournament, I doubt they would have anything potentially more popular to show at this time of year than the WJCs.

You're bang on, Mogilny. If this tourney were in Edmonton and Red Deer, I doubt you'd see full coverage. I don't think we should expect wall-to-wall coverage at every event in the future.

The WJC should be played in Canada every year, TSN is doing a great job.

We're going to be in for a shock next year when the tourney's on in the middle of the night in Canada. Enjoy the extra coverage while you can!

Ratings in Canada have so far been quite good - via TSN press release:

Canadians continue to embrace TSN’s coverage of the 2012 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. According to the latest audience data from BBM Canada, TSN’s coverage of Team Canada’s first three preliminary games have attracted an average audience of 2.3 million viewers.
• Dec 26: Canada vs. Finland – 2.3 million viewers
• Dec: 28: Canada vs. Czech Republic – 2.55 million viewers
• Dec: 29: Canada vs. Denmark – 2.0 million viewers

All three games ranked as the most-watched program of the day on Canadian television in all key demographics.

Compared to last year - 2.94m for Canada vs. Russia. 2.2 million and 1.8 million last season, for games against the Czech Republic and Norway.

Fantastic coverage. Props to TSN.

My only issue though is how they often manufacture 'anti-Canada' controversy by printing player's or coach's quotes out of context.

Thank you...

So I assume the NYE numbers are not out yet. I am also curious about the other games that they have not televised in the past.

Can't wait for the 14 hour time difference next year. Gold medal game will probably be at 4am PST.

whatever, i don't know if TSN has some local base or if it goes through toronto, but the point is that games are played at NHL rinks with everything facilitated to create top quality broadcasts.

they likely won't have the same kind of access next year.

as mentioned already, half of last year's games were played in a barn and it wasn't the same kind of coverage.

I agree, it won't be the same, just wanted to point out they are no where near TSN HQ, which happens to be across the street from my office.

Ferraro is fine. It is his first year so...

Give him and Miller time to build some chemistry.

They've worked together lots before, more than enough times to have chemistry. Pierre is just superior to Ray in this type of tournament though he will get better with time.
