That's true, but nonetheless, I don't think it is fair to blame our problems on Gionta's leadership.
Agreed. I blame it on his play, as well as the other vets who have all underplayed. They're supposed to be the ones we can rely on, and they haven't done that at all this year.

In 29 games played, he has 8 goals and 15 assists. Nothing stellar, but he has been like a 20 some goal guy for us. That's pretty much on par for him. So on a team that is not performing overall, I don't think he is to blame for anything.
I would not mind if he was shopped at the deadline, if we end up sellers, but I don't think he deserves blame for anything.
Making the players vote for the captain can tell you a couple of things:
1) There's too many leaders in the group and you have to make a decision ( definitely not the case )
2) There's no real leaders on the team and you just let the players decide for you because it's not obvious. ( bingo )
When you have a real captain on a team , there shouldn't be any voting , the coach will just give it to him because it's obvious HUMANS on the team are looking up to him.
Gionta is the ideal assistant , but definitely not the ideal captain , you don't need to be in the lockerroom to know that. You can spot natural leaders even on television.Gionta is not a natural leader , I don't even think Gorges is one , but Gorges is scoring a lot of points by his behavior. If we had a Serge Savard on the team we wouldn't have this conversation.
having said that, a great captain do need great warriors fallowing.
Even if we had Messier, this team would be going down hill. Leadership is great but the product overall sucks, then it still sucks...period.
Gionta is not a good captain , we can see it in tough times nobody really step up except Gorges.
So, out of curiosity, and ignore this if someone has brought it up already, but if Gorges is this AWESOME leader that is much better than Gionta... why is it he can't exercise his leadership in Gionta's absence and take over and rally the troops around him ? The team didn't fall apart like this when Gionta was in the line up.

We weren't above .500 with Gionta in the lineup. Revisionists at their finest acting like the team was doing fine at any point this season.
exactly why the captain shouldn't be blamed for the terrible season. It is the fault of the entire team. Captains are way overrated in sports anyway. If, as a professional, you need a captain to lead and inspire you, you probably need to find another line of work. Who cares who the captain is.
Carey Price should be the captain of the team (but let Gorges argue with the refs and, as such, he'll wear the C on-ice)
I would be totally against that. Carey Price is the player with the most pressure in the team and giving him the C will just flick things overboard. U know how the media is absolutely crazy when the team loses.

Koivu seemed to be quite a good captain, nay a GREAT captain, cliques aside. He would get me inspired.
He is the true captain of the Habs. The players wanted him to have the C but stupid management ****ed up by choosing Gionta who is a clone of Martin and Gauthier.
LOL, WHAT!?
Gionta is a clone of Martin and Gauthier? I'm not sure you know what "clone" means, but this definitely made me laugh.

Plekanec should be captain IMO. Best player of this team for the last five years, was drafted and developped by the habs. This team has too many talkers as leaders and not enough do-ers. A silent player who will lead on the ice by his play is exactly what this team needs.
Gorges is great, but I'm also a big fan of Gionta, Gionta gets unfairly grouped into the class of GOmez and Cammalari, who are obviously overpaid and float for the most part out on the ice. I even think Cammalari gets a bit undeserved bashing for one bad season, last year he did well and has had two great playoffs in a row. For the people wanting to give the C to Gorges, i ask, how long until you will be replacing him?
So because Gio is injured and is less around the team, you strip him the captaincy? That would be a disgusting behavior, especially since his arrival, a large part of this fan base wanted him captain.

Yup, Gorges should be captain because he got a raise. Don't you know this?
