For the people wanting to give the C to Gorges, i ask, how long until you will be replacing him?
i like Gionta too, it's just that for me the captain should be the one who puts his body on the line every night without a second thought, the guy who will do everything to win and protect the integrity of his teammates and his team........... the captain should be the guy that is willing to anything that is asked of him for the greater good of the team and to me gorges is the best teamplayer on this team.

bold: until he is not the hardest working player on the team

Really? as he should be? that makes no sense...was he born with a birthmark C on his chest? cause he sure as hell isnt that great of a leader. Some days I would give anything to have Saku back

I did. Hence why I adopted this nickname. Still, if I had to make a list about who are my favorite players on the Habs, I would have Price, Subban, Eller, Plekanec, Emelin and Kostitsyn before him. Markov too but that's another story. Just to show I don't have much of a bias towards Gionta or Gorges.

I love what Gorges brings to this team. Dude blocks shots with every single part of his body. He's a beast on the PK and plays vs opponent's best lines every night. No doubt, he's a leader.

The only thing is Gionta was given the captaincy, led by example and was well liked by almost everyone. Then, he has an average start, gets injured and everyone wants him out or you get this type of thread...

I guess the same could've been said for Jacques Martin eh :/

Yeah, it was a year before he was actually named capitaine. Now I need a new avatar. Maybe something related to Emelin... Emelin Boom?

You dont just give it to him. Gionta hasn't done anything to lose it, and judging by all reports, the guys respect gionta, and he deals with the media well. That's enough.

I'm sure gorges would be fine with it as well, but lets not over-value the C either. I wont go so far as to say its a prop, but if you can handle the media, and you are respected by your teammates, then there's no reason for it to change hands.

I'm not a fan of Gionta as captain. He's representative of Martin's era, aka the Dump-and-Change era. No more of that.

At 5m I'd rather have a bunch of other players than Brian Gionta.

Also, wasn't there the rumor that the guys in the lockerroom were annoyed that Gionta would side with Martin's (obviously flawed) gameplan instead of speaking up? This team is built on talent and speed (which, yes, we have a ton of) and Martin wanted to play a stupid defensive losing system and Gionta was its advocate and linchpin.

Question?

Is Gio with the team despite his injury? Maybe not on the road, but at least for home games?

Even with the injury, does Gio make his presence felt to his team? Is he in the dressing room with the guys?

Of course, some injuries may not able you to do so but in this case I don't think it's an issue.

I don't know if Gorges is a good candidate to be the captain. Does he have any experience as a captain?

Sure. I was merely pointing out how stupid it is to say Gorges shouldn't be captain because Gionta is captain. Nobody gives any relevant reasoning here aside from you (so far)

Just how much do things change when you change the sweater the C is stitched to?

The team didn't fall apart like this when Gionta was in the line up.
I was going to point this out but without the Gionta absence bit. Great leaders don't need a C stitched onto their uniform to be great leaders. Gorges already will be a good leader regardless of said letter. Leadership isn't the issue with this team, the issues in no particular order are the following:

1) Injuries (See the list)
2) Balanced lineup (See top 3 lines and defensive pairings)
3) Superstar/big offensive threat forward (Plekanec/Cole/Kostitsyn are basically our 3 best, you need one Kovalchuk, Hossa, etc on your team, we have none)

I think if we landed a superstar forward in the draft, especially one with size... it would change the dynamic of the entire team.

Nothing will change, again... was merely pointing out how dumb it is to say one way or the other. If you see my first post I was merely reversing his original post.

How many times have we seen Gionta give an actual interview? Take some heat off his teammates and onto himself?

How about Josh Gorges?

Yeah, leadership is all about the interview and taking "heat". That's the difference between 12th place and a Stanley Cup.

Gionta is generously listed at 5'7 and yet goes to the net like nobody else on this team, he's a 30 goal scorer on a team that is twenty something in scoring. What he gets he takes for himself.

But yeah rip off the C because he hasn't given enough good cliches while the microphone is in his face.

He played his junior hockey with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL, where he helped the Rockets to a Memorial Cup championship in 2004 as their captain. He was also the captain for the WHL in the Canada-Russia challenge in November 2003.
