all three of those players have minor league contracts. oswalt would be a major league contract for around 8-10 million dollars. with a back that's held together by rubber cement. no thanks.

Hearing that the Rockies are close to acquiring Boston's Marco Scutaro. Will keep you posted

Scutaro not a done deal. But Rockies are talking, trying to get it done. He would start at 2B and could hit second in lineup.

In Extra Bases, Abraham is saying there's smoke but no fire.

This is writing in real time... Rox have talked w Red Sox about Scutaro, but it appears now won't happen. Rox will keep looking for 2B
As far as a starter goes, if they were willing to load up in the bullpen, I think Aceves could also shoulder some of the load as a starter. Now that they have Bailey/Melancon to be the closer/set-up guy, bringing in other guys like Chad Qualls, Brad Lidge, Mike Gonzalez, and Pat Neshek. Maybe not the greatest strategy, but if you have a bullpen full of reliable arms, less pressure on the starters to go deep into games every night. That could be huge since Bard in particular has never pitched 100 innings in a season, and to a lesser degree Aceves has only topped 100 innings once, and it was last season. Also, since they are trying to conserve money, none of the guys listed should be all that expensive, unless I am just underestimating the market for relievers.
Another thought might be to have Aceves start the season as the number 5 starter, and then once you've seen what Padilla, Cook, Silva, and others have to offer, you can either move him back, or keep him as a starter.
i would hate to give nick punto a full time job in the american league east. he'll be fine as a backup fill in guy. but once you start relying on him as an everyday player, you're in trouble.
he's a good defensive player who is declining and aside from a career year last year (in 63 games), isn't a good offensive player. he's the "gritty" "scrappy" kind of guy who isn't good at baseball but good enough to be kept around. he's not a starter in the american league east. say what you will for scutaro, he can still hit pretty well and field well enough to not kill you.

Agreed. If Punto is starting, there's a problem. He's a good back-up, but certainly not anywhere close to being a starter in the AL East, I don't care how good his defense might be. It's the same thing with Iglesias. Yes he's 22, yes he has upside, but he's done nothing with the bat in 2 years in the minors. According to Peter Abraham, in 618 minor league at-bats, Iglesias has 27 extra-base hits. That's ****ing awful, no matter how you spin it.

If Punto/Iglesias is the SS tandem, we're in for a long, long year.
I know the Marlins are moving and that they need their stars, but there's nothing in the pipeline I'd protect from a Hanley Ramirez deal. Headcase or not, he's a middle infielder to build around. Those don't come along every day.

I wouldn't expect much offense from that spot in the lineup, but I think the other 7 spots in the lineup would make up for the lack of offense at short and in RF. They'd be alright, even more so if that money were to free up space for another addition to the pitching staff.
I don't know anything about Mortenson, except that he was a former supplemental first round pick. Hopefully that means he has some talent, and he just has to put it together. Now the fun part will be seeing who they get with the money they freed up.
