I don't think 2018 in South Korea will.
It's likely that even if NHL does not permit players to play in the Olympics, that any Russian in the NHL who would play on the National team would go to the Olympics anyway.

NHL players participating in the 2018 games in Korea is highly unlikely.
It's not a certainty but all the russians will go guarenteed and probably so will the rest of the euros and I'd like to see anyone stop Sidney Crosby from going if they all go because he'll be gone in a jiffy and he'll bring the whole team with him. I think as time goes on they'll (NHL) will realize that the Olympics has become just as important as the Stanley Cup, if not more important and you can't stop anyone from representing their country in such a situation. 2018 i'm not sure but I hope they do go, World Cup or World Championship means nothing compared to Olympic Gold, if people can't wake up to support their country because of time difference that's their problem. I'm sure if Canada and russia is playing at 3 am in the morning for gold in south korea ...all the citizens in both countries will be awake watching and if bettman doesn't believe that, he's a ninnyhammer.

It will be stupid from NHL if they ban players to play Olympics. If that happens I wish them lock out

2018, hmm far away to make a decision, 1998 Nagano Japan happened.
1998 was considered a "dry run" for the 2002 games in Salt Lake City. Having NHL players in the Olympics was supposed to sell the game more in the US. I don't think it had the desired result for many American owners. That is why they are against NHL participation anymore.

Yes. However, the players want to go and I think the Olympics will be included in the next CBA.

Privare interest of 30 teams/owners can not be more important than interest of national teams. There should be no right for clubs to ban players from international games.

If Finland doesn't win gold in Sochi I'm certainly rooting for Russians, they deserve it.

its unlikely that the nhl doesnt allow them, not allowing them is a huge middle finger to hockey fans

Considering Canada has better young players than Russia... I do not follow that line of reasoning. Obviously Russia has a great shot to win but little reason to think they have the best chance.

Anyway as a slight aside, if the Russian stars were the only elite players to play in 2014 (for whatever reason) would Russian fans really care about the hockey medal?

Well we care about the World Championships as much as Canadians care about the World Juniors so I guess the answer would be yes for the Olympics.

Just out of curiousity, isn't there the 2012 World Cup in September first? Is that still on?

But as of 2014, yeah they could win. They had a shot in 2010 but looked awful against Canada. The final score was 7-3 and the game was 6-1 at a certain point. Never did I think Russia would be down in the dumps that badly. Then again, I doubt you guys will have to worry about Nabokov playing for you by then. For the people that bash Joe Thornton for coming up short in the postseason I think just as many forget Nabokov getting every opportunity to lead a great team to the Cup and not doing so. The 2010 Olympics was the same thing.

But as usual when it comes to Russia they are a threat so long as they don't self destruct. Not to mention the players you are likely to pick (Semin, Kovalchuk, etc) are cookie cutter examples of players that are sure bets to not show up in a big game. That would bother me a lot. Can Ovechkin and Malkin carry the team to the top? I think they may have to personally

I doubt any of those guys will make the 2014 team. Unless they achieve Ovechkin/Malkin-like success over the next two years (something only Yakupov might do IMO), there will be better, more experienced players available.

There has never been a World Cup scheduled for 2012. The World Cup is dead.

If NHL starts f***ing with the Olympics I hope for a big lockout! Maybe the KHL will take over the status of the #1 league.(SEL is to small)

Russia is definitely producing good players, but so is Canada, if not more so, particularly on defence. The gap there is sizeable. The pressure on Russia at home after going 0-for-4 in best on best Olympics will also be huge.

Probably true.

But if the best players from the other countries mostly don't go it's sure gonna take the zing off any Gold medal that Russian team might(probably) would win.

It'll be a bummer whatever happens if the NHL doesn't play ball.
