The cap math always gets me confused.

why do we need to move a de-man if we get healthy? I could see in the off-season but we don't need to now.

Why do we need to move a dman when we get healthy (or really IF we get healthy)? As I see it we have:

Letang - Orpik
Martin - Michalek
Niskanen - Engelland
Lovejoy

That's our top 7 and will be for the playoffs unless we move a guy like Nisky or Lovejoy. In the offseason, yeah moving a veteran is a possibility, but not now.

You are only doing that math one way. Our cap room and salaries are also cut by the same number.

Yes. My main point was that we didn't have to send major salary out to bring players in at the deadline. Pens will have cap space probably near what those Feb. 27 totals are for Hemmer & Ruutu and making roster space by moving a player or two in the trade/ waiving them or if possible of sending them down to WBS would free up another .200 to .500 more.

We can't get an exact number because of the injuries still present and not knowing who'll still be out or become injured. They could have a lot more through LTIR or have very little (everyone is back healthy). Your guess on the final cap space is as good as mine, but the Pens cap hits are this on Feb. 27th 'vvvv'

We should really keep an eye on Phoenix. They're currently out of a playoff spot, the team is in financial dire straits, and they have a few RH scoring wingers that could help us - namely Whitney, Doan, and Vrbata.

I'd prefer Whitney. He'd probably cost less to acquire than the other two, is outproducing them, and would be the best fit for our PP.

You can't bank LITR as far as I understand it. Our available cap number would be projected to be under 100,000 at the time. We have been up against it all season. I am not saying I am right, but that is how I understand it.

I'm not banking it. They are allowed to go over the cap limit if a player is out on LTIR by the players Cap number as long as they are out the remainder of the season.

Edit: but you're correct.

Oh, so you are saying if Sid is out for the year? If he comes back, we would have a lot of maneuvering to do for those guys.

Yes.

Maybe not a lot of maneuvering, but roster spot(s) would need cleared if he's healthy and maybe one player as part of a trade for significant cap space.

We have to remember there is 15 players on the roster and they need to get it down to 12/13 if everyone is healthy. That gains cap space and when you put another roster player as a cap dump in a trade opens up more.

Pens could (don't quote me) have around 1.0 at the deadline after all the smokes cleared give or take.

If not healthy and say Sid's out the rest of the way they could have $1,881,081 they could go over the cap by Sid's cap number plus whatever they scrounge together from the moves.(Players-traded/waived/sent to WBS)

Edit:This is what they have right now with players sent down and whatnot. $528,604
That's with two extra forwards and one extra D-man on the roster because of injuries.

Yes, but you are not taking that 1 million and dividing it up. That cap
Number needs to be cut up just like the players. Therefore it would be like 250,000.

I think I'd be in the wait category/no. And if it ever got to yes, why would they want him since that means he's done or too fragile? At that point they'd never give up those kind of assets for him.

No. That is the teams cap space left not a players cap hit. Only the players cap hits are chopped up like that. The teams cap space is intact, but still is on a daily configuring depending on who's in or out.

I think we should be all over the Ducks' situation right now. I think we could possibly land Bobby Ryan without having to give up a piece we don't wanna give up. And Ryan fits beautifully. He's not a rental, nor is he an unproven forward. He's entering his prime. He plays all three forward positions. He has size. And he oozes skill. He's the right-handed James Neal trade from last season. We need to be in on this.

The Ducks sound like they don't want just picks/prospects in return. That arena was empty last night. A big game vs. San Jose, too. That doesn't bode well. I don't think they can afford a massive rebuilding plan. So, they'll want NHLers back. Plus, for cap purposes they'll need to take salaries anyway, most likely.

I would offer something like this:
D Paul Martin
LW Matt Cooke
C Dustin Jeffrey
RW Beau Bennett
2nd round draft pick in 2012

For

LW Bobby Ryan
RW George Parros
D Sheldon Brookbank

We get the forward we need (with or without Sid) to help us balance out the offense, plus we get an enforcer that can actually dress on most nights, plus a depth defenseman in case the injuries don't subside.

They get a quality puck-moving defenseman, a veteran third liner, a young center with a bit of upside and a California kid who has big upside as a scorer. Plus a high draft pick.

I wonder if we can pull something like this off.

Cap is not built up, they have space when they start the year and when players need called up chips away at it daily for as long as they are up.

They had like 1.3 when they started the year and for each player called up chipped away $1000.00 or more (depends on players individual daily cap number)away for each player/day they are on the roster. This is why we see them send player down on long breaks between games to save cap space not build it up.

Edit: Yes. the amount under on that given day. Sorry, I should just wait and get it all down, but keep forgetting to add and end up editing my posts.

You mean our entire team this season. He would fit perfectly because someone is always bound to take a penalty in the last 5 minutes of the 3rd for us.
