SF wins game one under Tampa's watch, 4-3. SF led 3-1 in the 3rd and 4-2 with three minutes left.

Henrich was the first star and had 2 goals.
Artukhin and Craig with the others.
Captain Shane Willis with an assist, as did Reid.

I'm sure Ex will post a run-down of the scoring. Skalde and Virtue were on the scoresheet, also.

From the Providence broadcast, Tarnasky's name was said quite a lot. The guy commented that O'Brien was getting a lot of ice time for a rookie, and that it was obvious why TB drafted Artukhin, who's up to 254 now. He scored on a short-side wrister.

Congrats to the Falcons on winning their first season opener in at least nine years! Springfield had lost its last six season openers and was 0-7-1 since the 1996-97 season. I don't have game-by-game results for the Falcons' first two seasons, 1994-95 and 1995-96.

Tomorrow's game at Worcester won't be broadcast on-line or on the radio by the Falcons. The IceCats are supposed to be broadcasting their games on-line at http://www.sportsjuice.com/providers...tname=wicecats.

Gotta be encouraged by Alexeev getting 6 SOGs too. Maybe the light has finally come on and he realizes nothing in this sport comes for free.

Looks like they were saving the mojo for the opener. Good start and hopefully they can build on it quickly.

This is all I'm posting tonight:

First goal
Henrich dragged the puck to the front of the net while skating on a two-on-one rush with linemate Shane Willis before beating Providence goaltender Hannu Toivonen 3:15 into the game.

Second goal
Henrich again finished a two-on-one rush with Willis. Willis stole the puck from a Providence defenseman and, after carrying it to the goal line, flipped a backhand drop pass to Henrich who scored his second goal of the game.

Glowing review of Artukhin in the Republican..

Quote:
Evgeni Artukhin, who at 6-foot-5, 254 pounds, may be the most physically imposing player in Falcon franchise history, leveled right wing David Gove with a punishing check that was called boarding by referee Dave Hansen.

Thompson immediately went after Artukhin and started the fight by getting a few good punches in before the big guy recovered, and knocked the veteran defenseman out.

"That's one powerful man," Thompson said. "But I had to stand up for my teammate."
Quote:
If Artukhin didn't catch Providence's attention during the fight, he certainly did with his goal late in the second period that gave the Falcons a 3-1 edge.

He got the puck from 33-year-old Jarrod Skalde at his own blueline, picked up a head of steam and skated in on Toivonen before placing a wrist shot just under the crossbar with 2:11 left in the period.

"We've worked with him and using his speed and going wide," Graham said. "He also had the presence to draw a penalty when they were going after him."
Exactly the kind of stuff we've been hoping to see from him.

R2 is such a project... but will be worth the wait when all is said and done. I don't believe he'll ever be a scoring liner, but a checking liner capable of scoring a few points and making life miserable for the opposition. There's nothing more frustrating that knowing there's a guy on the other team that you simply can't stop. He's too fast, he's too strong.

The thing for R2, IMO, is his hockey smarts. Once he matures hockey-wise... if he does... you add smarts to his total package and he is truly a weapon.

On the other hand.. I'd love to see him and Soucy and Reid or Tarnasky on the same line and just have them run wild.

In a certain broadcaster's book, that would make him a legend.

Line combos against Providence in the season opener was:

Henrich - Darby - Willis
Alexeev - Skalde - Artukhin
Craig - Tarnasky - Reid
McLaren - Skalde/Darby - Deveaux

Virtue - Rumble
O'Brien - Busenburg
Ranger - Egener

I'm still trying to find out why Soucy was scratched. He had some elbow problems during early part of camp, but he played the last pre-season games. Maybe Graham wanted to come out the gate with win by double-shifting the vet centerman. We'll see if he plays tonight against Worcester.

Thoughts about Dirk's lines:

Top line is all skill, and boy did they skate well last night. In my preview, I went out on a limb and kind of half jokingly said Henrich would have a shot at AHL ROTY skating with Darby and Willis. Nice way to start a pro career. Thanks for not making me look like an idiot...

Second line is SIZE and SPEED, and lots of both. R2 was definitely a monster out there. If he can keep that up and if Alexeev can start finishing too, that could be a killer line. I think Reid will be pushing those two, which will be a good thing.

Reid - Tarnasky - Craig must have Feaster drooling, as that is the epitome of the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey persona that he wants to cultivate. Tough, gritty, hard-workers, who find a way to score. Nice way for Craig and Reid to open the season. I'm calling that the 898 Line, because they were drafted 8th round, 9th round, and 8th round respectively. All bow to Guru Goertzen, who must find these guys using some kind of crystal ball. They all look like future NHL'ers.

I actually saw the line combos just after warm-ups, and I cringed when I saw Graham putting the greybeards of Virtue and Rumble together. Ballsy. I knew O'Brien and Busenburg would play together because they had such good chemistry in the pre-season. I really cringed seeing Egener and Ranger together -- two rookies, but maybe Egener's that good positionally... Be interesting to see the pairings tonight -- and especially after Dicaire get healthy. The big question is how Holmqvist ever gets in the lineup with Ranger playing so well, and Dicaire considerably ahead of him in the depth chart. Damn that Aucoin trade...

Just got the scratches in for tonight's game against Worcester. Same scratches as last night: Soucy, Fritz, Packard, Dicaire, Holmqvist, and Pratt.

Why is Soucy being scratched??

I don't have the line combos, but I imagine it'll look similar to last night. Trying to get the Worcester radio feed to work...

Storr's in net again. Was hoping for the Eklund debut with three games in three nights. Maybe tomorrow.

Soucy's basically o.k. He had a little fender bender last week, so may be a little sore and that may be part of Dirk's decision. Dirk's a reward-type coach hence same guys playing who skated in win last night.
Same lines as last night.

As I'm writing this, Reid with his first goal as a pro. Unassisted. Short-handed.

Did I just hear that Reid wears white skates? Nice.

Hartford vs. Philly on MSG right now.

Yep!

And the Falcon uniforms have lightning bolts down the leg and TBL logo on the shoulders.

Egener with the 2-5-10... Instigator/Fighting/Misconduct

Shots are 2 to 18. Oi.

I just tuned in. Any decisions in the two fights?

Edit:--> Heh, maybe Reid was just taking part in the white-out.

One of the great crimes with this lockout is missing the human slingshot.

War to those in Wusta tonight with the man in the white tux and sneakers.

You don't know what you've got until it's gone.

Here's to the human slingshot, people who don't know how to hold a hockey stick (to say nothing of knowing how to shoot) shooting into a shoe-box size hole in the net from the blueline, tricycle races on ice, tee-shirt guns, and people running in large balls.
[/sarcasm]

What room are you in?

Is there an AHL photo gallery out there like Yahoo has for the NHL?
