Horcoff was very very lucky to have had Mac T as his coach for a large part of his career. I think Mac T is most responsible for what Horcoff is to this organization, including his contract (it is my opinion and I may be wrong) that Mac went to bat hard for Horcoff at the time his contract was signed, and the way he is used and the belief the organization has in Horcoff all comes back to Mac T. Remember the Olympics when Mac was on TSN and on the quiz during the intermission the question was, who not in the selection camp had the best chance of playing there way on to the team? And with a straight face Mac answered emphatically Shaun Horcoff. It was embarrassing.
What other assets does he have? Face offs, well he is not very good there, PK again no better than the other PKers in-fact Jones, Lander, Petrell, Smyth, Belanger are as good or better. Cant/wont hit not even by accident, can't pass, cant receive a pass, shoots like a 12 year old, cant win a puck battle, play dies when the puck comes near him. I don't care what the contract is it could be one mill a year and my opinion would be the same, He is honestly just a bad hockey player. I bet if you could put him on waivers and then recallable at half the price I bet he would still clear.
It's hypothetical, since Horcoff can't be placed on waivers right now, but I can guarantee you that he would be picked up at half cap hit.

Welcome to our family, great to have you on board., let me take your coat, here are your slippers, make yourself at home, would you like an apperatif maybe a martini, grand marinier
You can't separate the man from his contract. His cap hit makes him nigh useless to this team (and any other), especially since he can't hit/score/win a draw/play the PK. No meaningful or consistent contributions + insane cap hit = detriment.
Long term cap hits are always a risk...thats the nature of the beast.
Its too bad that Lowe didn't have better judgement in contract negotiations...if he had then he would have signed Horcoff to a 2 year deal. The other option would have had him reconsidering dealing Stoll and letting Reasoner walk so that at the very least he protected his investment in Horcoff. Not the first time Lowe made a negotiating mistake during his reign and I suspect Tambo will add to his list of questionable decisions before his tenure is done as well.
Sorry about the late reply, just got back from Buffalo. Could've gone either way. I truely believe had we played the way we had, plus having RNH and/or Gilbert in the lineup, we would've won that game. I hate using the injury excuse but RNH would've made a bigger impact had he been on the ice.
Nice to see Sammy the Hobbit score two points, 16 pts in 19 games, not bad, GO SAMMY!
