The trade deadline is at 3pm on Monday, February 27, 2012. The Sabres play at 10:00 p.m. EST in Anaheim on Wednesday, February 29 (leap year!) in their first post-trade deadline game. My question is a simple one: Assuming no injuries--faulty assumption, eh?--what will this team's lineup be for that game in Anaheim?

In other words, what deals will this team make? Will your lineup reflect that the club will be buyers or sellers? If they're buyers, will the new players be rentals or players with at least another season on their contract? If they're sellers, who fills in the spaces for the departed?

This is not a trade proposal thread. This is not about what you hope the lineup will look like, or what trades you would make. This is purely about what you think the team will look like after this year's deadline. This is reality-based.

So, what does this lineup look like after the Deadline?

Not too much different. Maybe add a boarderline player that will score in his first game or two then never show up again. Lose another boarderline player for a draft pick....same as usual.

I think Regier will feel pressure to both make the playoffs and make a "core-altering" deal. Thus, I think they'll be buyers, and that they'll make a big deal, but they'll trade the most fringe member of the core: Drew Stafford.

Here's my guess at what the lineup looks like on 2/29/12:

Vanek-Stastny-Pominville
Adam-Roy-Stempniak
Leino-Hecht-Kassian
Gerbe-Gaustad-Kaleta

Regehr-Myers
Leopold-Ehrhoff
McNabb-Sekera
x Morrisonn

Miller
Enroth

Deal 1

To BUF:

Paul Stastny (6.6)

To COL:

Drew Stafford (4.0)
Tyler Ennis (.875)
Mike Weber (.925)

TOTAL IN: 6.6
TOTAL OUT: 5.8
Net: +800k

Deal #2

OUT

Brad Boyes (4.0)

IN

2012 3rd round pick

TOTAL IN: 0
TOTAL OUT: 4.0
Net Deal: (4.0)
Overall Net: (-3.2)

Deal #3

To CGY:

T.J. Brennan (considered AHL for purposes of this deal)
2012 3rd

To BUF:

Lee Stempniak (1.7)
2012 4th

TOTAL IN: 1.7
TOTAL OUT: 0
Deal Net: +1.7
Total Net: (-1.5)

The Stastny deal solidifies a top-6 center spot past the expiration of Roy's contract. I think they give Roy another opportunity to perform in the playoff since he hasn't had real playoff experience since the Boston series. If they miss the playoffs or he fails to perform in the playoffs, I think they deal him this summer for center prospects, and either force Adam into the 2C role or try to sign a Grabovski-type to fill that role. The other deals are typical deadline deals.

Haven;t you made the "why would Colorado trade Stastny" argument multiple times?

I like the 1st two deals.... i have no interest in Stempniak, and would rather swap that with a deal for Nielsen.

Vanek-Stastny-Pommer
Leino-Roy-Kassian
Hecht-Nielsen-Gerbe
Adam-Goose-Kaleta/McCormick/Tropp

Regehr-Myers
McNabb-Ehrhoff
Leopold-Sekera

Not much different. I'm thinking we don't turn it around, and Darcy looks to stock up draft picks/prospects for Hecht, Gaustad, and Boyes. Then we wait until the draft.

I think you're confusing me with Josh. I think I've made the "What's the point in trading Roy for Stastny?" argument.

Don't know much about stempniak....

Also i think that in James lineup it seems a waste to put Adam on the 4th line...

my lineup was meant to look like a playoff lineup... having players who bring more to a 7 game series, is not a bad thing. Who in that proposed top 9 would you play adam over? and please don't say Hecht. because then im going to have to go into a long, and winded explanation of Hecht's incredible value...

I have a feeling we're going to lose a good junk of our prospects and draft picks at the deadline.

but for whom? I don't know

I dunno. Not trying to be a jerk, but I just don't see how you can possibly put forth what you think the lineup will look like without describing how you got there, which means making trade proposals, which makes this just another trade proposal thread.

Trading for Neilsen and locking him up for 3 years or so would be an under the radar but fantastic deal for Buffalo. Great defensively, can chip in 40 points a year, and will be a rock on the 3rd line for any team.

So it'd be perfect...and that means the Sabres would never do it. Kinda like how they should have gotten Sami Pahlsson a couple years ago. I mean, shoot...Pahlsson would fit in on this team with extra letters in their name like a glove!

I honestly don't know. If Anaheim is actually stupid enough to gut their roster, I can see Terry and Ted forcing Darcy to make moves, regardless of where the team is, and putting us in "buy" mode for the deadline + offseason.

Anaheim certainly is a situation to watch. My deal(s) for the Sabres:

To Edmonton: Stafford
To Buffalo: Gagner

Edmonton had a proverbial hard on for Stafford for awhile while Gagner is 22 year old 4 year vet stuck being RNH and Horcroff for ice time. Buffalo gets a body who can actually play center with a good bit of upside left.

This frees up some salary space for this deal:

To Anaheim: Derek Roy, Jordan Leopold, 2nd round pick (Buffalo's)
To Buffalo: Bobby Ryan, Toni Lydman

Buffalo picks up a young power forward struggling after a big year and changes the complexion of the D, picking up former sabre toni Lydman

Vanek-Adam-Pomniville
Ennis-Gagner-Ryan
Leino-Hecht-Kassian
Gerbe-Gaustaud-McCormick

McNabb-Myers
Sekera-Ehrhoff
Regher-Lydman

Miller
Enroth

Hard to see exactly who comes in or if they'll even make a move - I can see them getting healthy first and then going on some kind of streak that fools management into thinking their team is OK afterall as presently constituted. If an acquisition is made, I think the proposals above targeting a center make the most sense - especially after the Sabres have been categorically criticized for thinking Leino would solve their issues at center.

If a trade happens, I think Stafford, Roy, Ennis and Weber seem the ones most likely to be gone. The Sabres may try to peddle others but I can't see there being much interest around the league for Boyes or Gragnani.

I think you're very unlikely to see some major re-tooling like Regier did in 2002 when it was obvious the team was on a downhill slide and needed a facelift.
Briere was brought in, Hecht was brought in, CuBro was traded, etc etc.

But really, how is this thread any different from the other "trade" threads?
Every post requires arguments and how they get to that imaginary line-up. /shrug
