Canada battles for Bronze - Fans start selling Gold medal tickets
Fans felt the heartbreaking loss after Team Canada lost to Russia at the World Junior Hockey Championships and now some are wondering what to do with their gold medal game tickets.
Canada lost 6-5 to Russia in Tuesday's semi-final match and now they will face Finland for the Bronze.
Russia will take on Sweden for the coveted world title.
Some disappointed fans, who were counting on watching Canada in the gold medal match, are now trying to unload their tickets.
Hockey Canada hopes that fans will pass the tickets on if they don't plan to use them.
"We encourage people if they don't plan on attending a game that they can give them to friends. We just want to make sure the tickets get used and the players, regardless of what country they're from, have a great experience in Alberta and in Canada," said Scott Farley of Hockey Canada.
Canada vs. Finland gets underway at 1:30 p.m. at the Saddledome and the Russia vs. Sweden match starts at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Both games will be broadcast on TSN.
Hockey Canada endorses one ticket exchange website which is the only one where the tickets are verified.
The TicketExchange allows people to buy and sell tickets to the games and prices vary.
The above article has me concerned as a fan of hockey, and as a Canadian.
For a while now I have developed the feeling that some Canadian hockey fans, if not most, have begun to expect the Canadian Junior national team to battle for and ultimately win the Gold Medal during these tournaments. The above article proves this feeling that I have, albeit probably to a much lesser degree.
I have to question the intelligence, and logic of these 'Fans' that bought tickets to the Gold Medal game, and are now selling them, only because Canada isn't playing for the Gold Medal. I would like to ask them "What part of the title of the tournament did you not understand? Last I checked, it's titled the World Junior Hockey Championship, not the Canada v.s. xxxx for the Gold medal tournament."
Bob McKenzie said it best last night, "This loss is a humbling experience for Team Canada and their fans, as there are many good teams in the world."
should of sold them at puck drop yesterday when the frenzy was still going on, I made a killing compared to what these guys are going to get for them now.
Mehhh, If they are just "normal" hockey fans, they probably don't care about the Gold Medal game. What they have paid for the tickets is a sunk cost. If they can get a decent price for them, it's probably a rational decision to sell them provided that their marginal benefit exceeds marginal cost. LOL.
No round robin game in the Sattledome had less than 12500 spectators. 17,000 fans showed up to watch Russia and Sweden knowing that they would not be seeing Canada
No other nations would provide that kind of support for teams if their own country wasnt playing the same day.
If you trash Canadians for only showing up to watch Canadians than you are just completely ignorant
I would not. I would never risk missing something as epic as last years final.
Being a Canadian I wouldn't give them up either yours and Russia's game to end the round robin was pretty enjoyable & exciting hockey to watch. Who wouldn't want to see the rematch?

It's absolutely wonderful the way the fans filled the seats and supported the other teams, but that is for the most part a result of Canadians being forced to buy packages for the entire tournament in order to secure seats to team Canada games. If only single tickets were sold to everything, it would be a very different story.

They didnt have to show up though. 6k people showed up to watch Latvia get crushed by the US in the relegation round. If Canada didnt care, those numbers would be similar for days in which Canada didnt play.
I understand that plays a role, but you can never say Canada doesnt give support to non-Canadian teams.

Who wouldn't want to attend a game that held the possibility of the US being demoted to Division 1?

Some people, one person I know who has been jacked for all the games in Calgary. I don't get it...sure you are upset but now you don't want to go??? I told him to sell that ticket for way above face value before the Semi's concluded just in case. He said he'd go ,but now his tune has changed due to Russia after the game.

Firstly, it has nothing to do with 'intelligence'. Fans took a gamble which based on the last 10 years was a pretty good bet. You could call fans unsportsmanlike, but there's no cause to call them stupid. Let's face it, the whole price structure that Hockey Canada (or whoever) is able to charge for tickets is largely based on the fact that people expect Canada to be playing close to or right up to the end. If in the future Canada no longer regularly goes to the semis/finals you can bet your left nut that ticket prices will drop like a stone.
Secondly, IF nobody shows up THEN you can start criticising. You can't convict and execute people for a crime you think they MIGHT commit 4 days from now.
I mean it's been a whole decade with Canada in the gold medal game, is it that wrong to expect them to battle for the gold? Do Swedeb, Russian and USA not expect their teams to compete for the gold?

Reminds me when Calgary hosted the Grey Cup in '93, and that the fans snapped up tickets thinking the Flutie-led stamps would reach the final. Wasn't surprising given how good the Stamps were at the time.
When the Stamps lost to the Esks in the West final, they began dumping tickets for a fraction of the value.

Well, DuH! What do you expect? a participant ribbon!
I wouldn't want to go to a gold medal game between a team that beat us and a team that I don't know anybody from. The best scenario is that these people sell their tickets to fans of either team and let them cheer on their players.
Whats the story here? Some will sell their tickets because they can watch it at home instead now that Canada aint in it.
Noone will sell it in order to let the "other teams fans get a glimpse at their teams". They'll sell it to make a dollar.
If it's because, as someone said, Canadians dont know any players on the Russian/Swedish team - then it saddens me a bit. But making this into a "they only bought tickets because they knew Canada would be in it"... is exaggerating. They bought tickets to be sure they could if they wanted to. Perhaps they have to sell in order to be able to afford bronze match tickets?
There are hockey fans and Team _____ fans. As I hockey fan, I would look forward to RUS/SWE but I can totally understand Team Canada fans be uninterested. I don't understand what the problem is.
