Game 39: Blue Jackets at Sharks, 1/5, 10:30 p.m. EST, FSOhio | Keep piling on

Last time on "As the Jackets Spiral Downward"...

http://www.bluejacketsxtra.com/conte...ers/index.html

Quote:
Alexander Semin and Dennis Wideman scored 4-on-4 goals to make it 2-2 at 6:48 and 3-2 at 7:16, respectively. They were the seventh and eight goals given up by the Jackets in 4-on-4 situations. The Blue Jackets have scored one 4-on-4 goal. It is but one of many parts of their game that is lacking, but it was the difference tonight.

After the game, Blue Jackets coach Arniel acknowledged the 4-on-4 goals hurt, but seemed unaware of his team’s poor record in such situations.

“Have you noticed that we’ve been beaten up 4 on 4, goals against?” Arniel asked in response to a reporter’s question. “I don’t think so. I’ll go and show you the stats on that. That hasn’t been a problem for us. It was tonight.”

When a reporter pointed out that the Blue Jackets have been outscored 8-1 in 4-on-4 situations, Arniel said “Is that what it is? Oh, OK. I guess you guys have all the answers and you’re just waiting to jump. I guess we’ll have to work on that.

“So just keep piling on. Whatever you want. Just keep piling on.”

With that, Arniel left the podium, ending his postgame session with the media.

The Records

: 10-23-5, 25 pts., 30th in NHL
: 21-11-4, 46 pts, eighth in West

: 2-7-1, lost last game played
: 6-4-0, won last two games

"Just keep piling on."

Trouble Out West

The Jackets are a dismal 1-10-1 at San Jose since 2003-04, the win coming last season.

"“I don’t think so. I’ll go and show you the stats on that. That hasn’t been a problem for us."

No, Really, Trouble Out West

For all games in which San Jose is the home team, including one in Sweden: 3-15-2.

"Is that what it is? Oh, OK."

Losing Streaks

A loss tonight would be the eighth time this season the CBJ have lost at least two in a row, including streaks of eight, three and six games. The CBJ have only won two in a row once, in the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

"Just keep piling on."

Would the 2011-12 CBJ highlights to date be easier to stomach if set to music made popular by the Benny Hill Show, as heard below?

"I guess we’ll have to work on that."

Fire Arniel Threads
The CBJ forum has had so much talk on firing Scott Arniel as head coach that the original thread was locked for passing 1,000 posts and it is now on a part II.

“So just keep piling on. Whatever you want. Just keep piling on.”

The chances of me staying up to watch this team on any of its west coast games for the rest of the season are not good.

Just keep piling on.

"Pretty sure this game starts at 7:30. I can show you the stats on that if you want."

"7:30 Pacific time. It'll actually be 10:30 in the Eastern Time Zone."

"Is that what it is? Oh, OK. I guess you guys have all the answers and you’re just waiting to jump. I guess I’ll have to work on knowing what time zones are. So just keep piling on. Whatever you want. Just keep piling on."

Good gravy, Arniel really said that?? I thought our GDT was just being silly.

Excellent music choice for this occasion, Moo

Oh yes, our head coach really said that stuff. Our season is so much of an epic fail so far that some things like Arniel's presser you simply can't make up. Just when you think it can't get worse... heck, sometimes I think Murphy is about to end his law because it bites us so hard.

Well, this is my favorite time of the season. Sharks game tonight, then going down to LA for the Kings and Ducks game.

Good news is that the guy and his wife who have season tickets next to mine are out of town and he gave me their pair. I'm bringing a friend who is a Philly fan and his friend. Since they are Flyers fans, I have convinced them to wear some of my CBJ stuff and cheer against the Sharks. Should be good times. I hope it ends up like last season where I get to throw my hat on the ice.

Also, my ACA scarf will be making it's hockey debut.

Hell, my avatar is from the 3-0 win at San Jose last season!

Jackets!

With Anaheim's loss last night, they are now level with us on games played. Magic number for clinching the 30th spot stands at 87. A big two points for us to lose tonight. I for one am thankful it's a late start, and curse the Kings for playing us in an afternoon game on Saturday.

Sorry to spoil your season but you've got 25 points, not 35 as indicated in your GDT opening post

You'll win this game though, I'm willing to bet whatever amount of vCash I still have.

I was going to post one but I didn't feel it was within my purview. Besides, I've had hit0-and-miss results on that web site - sometimes the vid does not play.

If only some great writer could turn your season's misfortunes into a feel-good comedy movie like Major League. I would root for the loveable Rick "Mild Thing" Nash, but a peel-away cutout of Arniel is out of the question

Fun stat of the day.

We have had 156 Power Play opportunities, resulting in 23 goals. We have been short handed 118 times, resulting in 30 goals.

Taking us to 15 in both categories.

18% PP = 28 Goals
82.5% PK = 21 Goals

Average special team would have us from a -7 to a +7 for a 14 goal turn around. We would only be -21 for the season instead of -35. That would firmly have us somewhere around Edmonton and still 10 or so points off the pace.

Good grief we suck. But the question is; How the hell can you have 38 more opportunities and have have a -7 in special teams (-6 if you count short handed situations)?

Our 5 on 5 ratio is tied for 4th worst in the NHL at a staggering .78. San Jose is at a 1.5.

Does the 23 for 156 account for Philly's shorthanded 3 on 1 goal?

What's kind of funny is that I don't remember the incident to put this in context for it's comedic value. That's kind of rare for me on the CBJ side of things, especially about something that happened this season.

Haha i remember that so clearly! I was screaming at my tv "how the F do they get a 3 on 1 on a pk!!" I dont remember what exactly happened in order to get into that situation. Why was everyone so deep in the zone?

So, who will play Savard or Johnson or Clitsome? I prefer Savard over these two.
