Buddy just texted me saying he heard this on the radio. Thought I would pass along. Schneider movement?
Fully Hearsay.
Yzerman had a long pause when discussing whether he thought his current goal tending was good enough.
Why would it be Schneider? He didn't play.
Josh Harding did, and Minny has good goaltending in the AHL right now too....
I do think he was scouting goalies, but he did say they aren't willing to pay with high picks, so.....TBay has nothing we want, and we need goaltending as much as the next team.
It was interesting that he decided to fly over for the night though....
Despite Luongo's play of late - why would you move your best insurance policy (Schneider) in case he gets injured (not like other team's haven't been playing more physical against us this season)?
Yzerman doesn't seem like a GM to overpay for a player (only way I'd move Schneider); so I doubt Schneider is in the equation.
We'd need a back up in return and I wouldn't want either of their goalies. Although Tampa's defence has got to take some of the blame. Hell, I'd roll the dice on resurrecting Raycroft before either of those two.
Tampa is in dire needs of a number #1, and even though he's having a rough year, it would take Hedman for me to even consider moving Schneider. And still at that I think I'd rather go into the playoffs with the Tandem we got. Possibly only second to Boston's.

The only way I move Schneider to Tampa during this season is if Hedman is coming back.
At the draft I'd do Connolly and a 1st, maybe a 2nd, if its higher than 45th.

Even adding Hedman isn't necessarily a plus to our cup chances this year. I'd expect limited things from a young D, even one with huge potential, coming into a new system. Schneider as Luongo insurance might actually be worth more in the playoffs.
Unless it's an overpayment, the Canucks should roll with a Luongo-Schneider combination entering the playoffs.
Yeah, I agree with this. No point in making any big moves right now, especially with our goaltending. Yzerman can scout all he wants but he's probably got a better shot to land a guy like Backstrom than Schneider.

Edit:
Listened to it more. Not sure. Sounds like he's holding his cards close to his chest. Draft picks are off the table tho apparently.
I heard the interview and Yzerman didn't say a thing about scouting goalies or being in Vancouver for any other reason than to catch a Western Conference game between two teams he doesn't often get to see. Having said that though, that could be just the front he's putting on.

I don't think he'd come out to watch a Minnesota game without some interest in a player or players. It's like travelling across the country to watch paint dry for a couple hours.

Odds are he was in in AB for the World Jr? There was no game there yesterday. Lets not get too excited here but this is a spark, but not a fire yet.
It could be the perfect time to get Downie out of Tampa Bay. He's having a bit of an off year which could prove to be a good thing because he's an RFA at year's end. If his production is down it'll just mean Gillis can re-sign him to a 3-4 year deal on the cheap. Downie has a rare blend of toughness and skill and would give the Canucks 4 very strong lines and depth to account for injuries come playoff time.
If the Canucks could move Schneider for Downie and a pick or prospect it's something to look at IMO. Odds are he would have a bigger impact in the playoffs than Schneider...
As Schneider didn't play (and that was announced the day before the game that he wasn't going to), I would assume Yzerman wasn't there to watch him. If he was there looking for a goaltender, I'd think it was Harding.
On the topic of whether I would trade Schneider, I'll say again - I don't want the Canucks to address the goaltending situation until after the season. We need Schneider as an insurance policy in the playoffs in case Luongo shows any signs of cracking, and then the end result can help us dictate which direction to move forward in. Moving a goaltender closer to the draft would be a solid plan, IMO.

It's the safe way to go. As far as giving the team the best chance to win on a nightly basis I think you do that by upgrading the starting lineup with a Schneider trade, assuming there's a good deal to be had...
I just don't like the idea of having one of our best players watching every game in the playoffs.
I'm also skeptical the Canucks would move away from Luongo even if his season ends poorly. Gillis won't ask him to waive his NTC and Luongo knows he has a better chance to win a cup in Vancouver than if he's moved...

What if Schneider gets dealt and Luongo goes down with a season ending injury (ala a worse form of Lucic type of hit). Again, it's not like other teams haven't taken runs at our better players this season.

I heard it to.
Would any GM say he is looking to get a new goalie?
THe fact Yzerman paused and really had to think about how he was going to answer the question on his teams goaltending, is definitely enough to base a discussion on.
Its mostly wild speculation, but we all know Yzerman needs a goalie down there.

Then finding out that the paint has already dried.
Worst feeling ever.
