Appraisal of N. Nikitin...

Bruins fan coming in peace...

I was looking to get some opinions on the overall performance of one Nikita Nikitin.
How is he playing? does he have a future in Columbus or in the NHL?
That sort of thing.

I am a fan of his...

Thanks

I'll respond with the least helpful answer possible, as that is about all the enthusiasm I can muster right now.

He sucks less.

He hasn't yet learned to play like a Blue Jacket.

He's still in shape, he still tries to actually win games, plays hard, and doesn't look completely lost out there.

I'm sure the coaches will break him of those bad habits soon though.

For being a "never heard of that guy before..." out of St. Louis, I've been generally surprised with his play. He has played well along side Tyutin with the CBJ and has showed that he can hammer the hell out of that puck from the point at times... I think he is (at best) a #5/6 d-man on a well built team, worthy of spot filling on at PP unit here and there.

We've had worse d-men in Cbus before.

***edit***

As to the future thing... if they can sign that #1D-man they still want, with the prospects in the system, I don't think he will be re-signed.

I can't imagine a smart scenario where Columbus should allow Nikitin to walk away without an extension. He's better than 4 maybe all 5 of our other defenders that play on a nightly basis, so with that said, they will let him go.

I had a "chat" with St Louis fans a few days after the trade. One thing they thought was that he might have been struggling there because of communication issues. Obviously, that evaporated when paired with Tyutin.

He has been a bright spot on this team. I am also a big fan of his name.

I was always a big fan of this guy in St. Louis. He seems to be a guy who really wants to play his best on a nightly basis. Happy he's doing well after the trade, hope he can secure a decent length contract in the future.

Nikitin has been one of the very very few bright spots this season. Alot of people didnt expect much of anything when the trade went down, much like the trade for Letestu.

He has a great outlet pass out of the zone. Seems like is always tape to tape. He can play the shut down role or play on the PP. He has a hard slapper that has help us score bc of the rebounds. He really hasnt made to many bone head mistakes (see Wiz). I really hope he sticks around, because like I said hes been a nice surprise.

Part of me thinks he's another Clitsome/Stralman. Gets a bunch of points, gets an extension and then gets exposed the next season.

I hope I'm wrong though.

Nikitin is a pleasant surprise. For a big body, 'defensive' type (who I thought he was anyway), he's an excellent passer, and very good at handling the puck. I honestly think he has better hands than some of our bottom six forwards. He's a decent skater, but does have to keep his positioning or pretty much anyone can blow by him. Nice, hard shot and surprisingly accurate.

I'm happy he won't be going anywhere soon due to his RFA status and I would expect the next GM to offer him a fair deal.

I like him. He makes youthful mistakes, but hasn't been Jacketized yet.

He's extremely shifty with the puck for a defenseman, easily the best hands of any of the guys we have. Crisp passes, good positioning, very poised. If you want to see textbook defense watch the play he made on Thornton one-on-one last night. Took away Thornton's options and pushed him outside, then swept the puck away from him. Thornton scored a few moments later, but he was well-covered and batted the puck out of the air. I would like to see him use his frame a bit more along the boards and in the corners, but he doesn't shy away from contact. Has a nice shot, but needs a little better accuracy.

I disagree, because it's not really his points that stand out in my opinion. I think it's more that he can skate for a guy his size well, he is an outstanding passer, he can puck handle nicely for a defender, and he is solid defensively. I think he's a keeper as a #4 guy, not a 3 million dollar defender yet, but still a solid 2-2.5 guy.

Depends on the question.

Our defense continues to be a weakness. Is he the solution? No. He's a band aid on a slow leak. Appreciate the band aid but the hole needs plugged.

But Nikitin has better hockey think and speed than Clitsome and hard play and better defensive than Stralman.

I don't think anybody's ever suggested he's the answer. Simply a very nice supporting piece. (Not to mention a pleasant surprise. How many of those have we had this season?)

Yeah, I don't think anyone has suggested he is the answer either, Sam. He is a pleasant surprise. Just not making me say "whoa!" If it makes you feel better, neither does Wiz? I want a guy that makes me notice him.
