I haven't heard Joey from the North End since the Lightning Series last year. I miss his calls.

Rip Luongo all you want for hIs games in Boston but calling him a coward for not playing tomorrow isn't fair . Lu wants this game and I'm guessing he's pissed he's not starting . It's not his call.

BS. If he wanted that game he'd be able to talk AV into letting him start. Instead he's hiding behind the convenient excuse AV provided to bail him out.

Kinda sad. The Habs get the idea of going out there for redemption to try and exorcise the demons and the Canucks do not. Guess that's the difference between the East and West

This non-Luongo move sickens me.

The cowardice is too much already. I'm usually the kind of fan that some would consider overly respectful of the opponent. But this team has done everything possible to make this difficult, and now -with this latest move- impossible. I feel bad for their fans, tbh.

I haven't said this previously, but during last year's Finals I started looking back to the Montreal series and thinking how, by contrast, the Habs had played with a measure of heart and pride that made them worthy rivals.

Blech.

I'm scratching my head over this decision.

Does Alain Vigneault really think that starting Cory Schneider gives the Canucks the best chance of winning???? I don't believe that for a minute. If your team is playing the best team in the league you put your best players out there. ALL of them.

Is he doing it because Luongo is too mentally fragile against the Bruins??? Could be, because Luongo certainly got worse as the SCF went on. But if that is true shouldn't Luongo play anyway to toughen himself up against the Bs in a game that is only for 2 points and not the Cup???

The Garden faithful will certainly have something to say about it tomorrow. I can't wait.

I can see that this game goes where the refs want it to go.. I picture both teams coming out flying and hitting everything and yapping from the get-go but I'm concerned we're going to get a lot of ticky tack "roughing" penalties and misconducts because the refs are going to try to keep the game in hand and not let it get out of control.

I'm actually scared to death of that. Games where the refs stifle any emotion whatsoever are frustrating as hell. Hoping the refs step aside for the most part.

Has it been confirmed who's starting for Boston?

I'd say Thomas until Rask got the shutout last night.

And how does this disagree with what Fleger said?

Felger said Orr only fought once or twice, a la Gretzky. He actually had a rep as a pretty tough fighter, especially early in his career.

No , that used to be the case. Not anymore . They basically told Luongo we decide when you play now instead of him running the show . An example of this was the team giving Cory 5 straight starts earlier in the year .

Personally I wish Lu was playing . He started back in Chicago after playoff lossses and played lights out . The hawks were a bigger demon then the bruins and he played well at the united centre last year . 40 save shutout.

Weird decision IMO .

If you insist on hangin' around this part of the boards you'll prolly see Luongo gettin' called still more colourful things. It won't be fair. Never is. I learned that lesson back in '08 on the Habs board in the playoffs...

Edit: I don't know if he's a coward, but I'm pretty sure he's chicken!

Both GM Mike Gillis and Alain Vigneault said before the season and during the pre-season that they would be taking the decision on games to play out of Luongo's hands and would be giving Schneider more games.

The Canucks also brought in Roland Melanson as his new goalie coach without consulting Luongo. Melanson has worked on tweaking Luongo's glove hand positioning and depth in the crease. Lately the changes have resulted in stellar play from Luongo with his glove hand being much more prominent of late.

Here is ESPN's Pierre LeBrun on the move to start Schneider:

Canucks starting Schneider over the red-hot Luongo tomorrow in Boston. Interesting.

My sense is that it's Vigneault's way of downplaying the hype for this game. Which he did, generally, when I interviewed him yesterday.

He's not playing because his home/road splits are poor and he obviously can't handle playing in that environment tomorrow. Given the circumstances, this was an easy choice for Vancouver. Not only does it protect his current confidence, but it also gives them the best chance to win the game. Anyone who argues otherwise a) can't read stats or b) didn't watch the Cup Finals last year.

Luongo:
926% Save Percentage at home vs. .909% on the road
1.97 GAA at home vs 2.79 on the road

Schneider
.918 with a 2.48 at home
.940 with a 1.93 on the road.

This decision was a no-brainer.

How many times have you heard any goalie complain if the backup is starting?

Now it's win/win for Vancouver

If they win, they win
If they lose, we beat their backup goalie and can explain it away by saying that the goals we scored would've been easy saves for Luongo
