Why teams struggling between the pipe didnt trade for a goalie yet?
Put Burrows and Gill on the Leafs and they don't have half their current problems. Toronto lacks solid penalty killers more than a prime goaltender. Reimer has been reasonably good for essentially a rookie who has to deal with the pressure of Toronto. Price didn't exactly fare well for quite some time prior to becoming what he is now.
Teams aren't trading for goaltenders because they are not going to acquire a clear upgrade without significant cost. Sure, Toronto for instance, could get an older guy to help back stop Reimer but is he that much better than Gustavsson? If they wanted Schneider, Vancouver would be looking at Kulemin or Schenn, thus an immediate no. They are better off giving the two goalies they have the chance to prove themselves.
Only Ottawa made a move for Bishop, none other goalies was traded.
So im asking again why team struggling between pipe didn't make a move?
Tampa, Bay ? Waiting next summer (but why didnt they do something all season long?)
Colombus? Waiting next summer
Toronto? I guess not willing to pay a lot for a goalie, they hope their goalie will do the jobs.
Flyers? I guess they hope their goalies will turn around.
But why these team didn't do anything all season long?
Are you surprised some upcoming UFA like Nabokov, Montoya, Harding, Sanford wasn't traded? Personally i was expecting one of Montoya or Nabokov to go....
I wanted to see a goalie brought into Toronto but my guess is that the asking prices were crazy. When Paul Gaustad lands a first rounder you know the market has gone insane.
I imagine it's because the GM's with the goalies want too much. In the past goalies were cheaper than #1 d-men and first line forwards and some people are obviously trying to change that.
With guys like Bernier, Schnider and Rask, you've got guys that their teams have put tons of time into and they're obviously making other team's in the league better by giving up such players. They don't want something marginal in return. They're going to want impact players for these guys.
Because all of these backup goalies that a lot of people here think are going to be stars aren't guaranteed to become that way and teams know that.
I think ti's hard to deny how good Rask and Schnider are. They've both had seasons where they've had to play tons of games and they've looked amazing doing it.
It's not like the Jim Carey story... these guys have both been sought after commodities for several years and their play hasn't loosened up one bit over that time.
The fact that Bishop garnered a 2nd round pick shoots a hole right through your valuation of Cory Schneider btw.
How?
Bishop is a young candidate for the AHL goalie of the years award and according to Eklund ''is believed to be an absolute star in the making''
So the price to acquire one of the best goalie prospect not playing in the league is only a 2nd ? An old upcoming UFA like Hall Gill garnered more than that!
The way i see it, the value of Schneider 2-3 years ago was probably close to Bishop value now.
And now that Schneider is heading to RFA status, and being vulnerable to an offer sheet..it will be interesting to follow....

I really don't know what the Wild would have wanted for Harding and I'm sure that there have been 20,000+ posts over the last two years regarding Bernier's value, but there's no doubt that the price for Rask or Schnider would have been sky high.
If I'm Vancouver I think I would have wanted Schenn and if I'm Boston the price for Rask would have been so sky high that any GM would have been "hanging up the phone in laughter."
Schnider looked good in the playoffs last year and he's played a ton of games for the Canucks. He looked amazing when Luongo was hurt last year. IMO he's a proven starting goalie. He's played well in all situations. He was the reason the Canucks won the presidents trophy last year.
As for Rask. I'm going to ignore how often the Bruins play the Leafs and just look at the fact that Thomas has one year left on his contract and he's getting old... or he is old already. I could see Tampa signing him when he becomes a free agent. Whether or not that works out for them is yet to be seen. Gotta wait and see if his play degrades by the end of next season.
When a team knows they have a legitimate goaltender on their hands, they're not giving him up. Which makes paying a high price for everyone else a very bad idea.

TB will get a goalie in the off season, they thought they had goaltending but father time finally kicked Roloson in the junk and I doubt the options the Lightning wanted were available
Columbus - Their GM is the worst GM in Hockey so that's part of it, the other piece being they thought they had goaltending with Mason and Dekanich
Toronto just signed Reimer and Burke won't admit that he over valued what he had.
Flyers are committed to Bryz, they can't get out of that contract and they can't invest anymore cap space into fixing the problem.
Nabokov is going to re-sign on the Island, no one wanted Montoya, Harding the price must have been too steep, Sandford is needed if the Blue Jackets want to attract more then 6 fans per game for the rest of the year.
Next season Schneider will have moved, Harding will sign somewhere to be a starter and maybe Vokoun will move out of Washington but other then that I don't think there are many other big goalie moves that will be made.

Huet back in the NHL on a cheap contract? At 5 500 000$ he have nothing to do in the NHL, but at 1 200 000$ ? Sound intriguing.
There are also one European goalie.I always forget his name that could make the jump to the NHL.
Im curious about Cedric Dejardins too.. Boucher coached him in the AHL and they traded for him last year, so maybe Tampa will give him a chance again, at least at the training camp then waive him to the AHL ?

You must be crazy, he wont even be 40 by then. I dunno how I feel about signing a goalie that young...

I have been suggesting Harding for quite a while now, I thought it was a given that he'd be moved given the circumstances. There's no doubt in my mind Burke tries to sign him July 1. Even if he's not a starter to some people he's a more than capable 1B goalie. I don't see the big ticket goalies being worth it from a Leafs POV. Schneider would cost an arm and a leg, Schenn would only be a starting point for him IMO. Also, If I'm Gillis or PC, I'm holding onto my backups. Their value won't go down and I have all summer should I choose to move them. Having two starters is a massive bonus without question. When we look at who's consistently at the bottom of the standings it's the teams with poor goaltending. It's a premium position and GM's know this and will ask a kings ransom for above-average guys.
Goalies are very tough to appropriately value. I think there value has dropped a little around the league because their are a lot of quality goalies around the league certainly more than a decade ago, and the right system allows better play for certain guys. I mean who thought Mike Smith would be good?
In any event the young ones that are good like Bernier, Rask and Schneider are valuable to good teams. Their prices are also astronomically high. The funny part is teams should find the middle ground to pull it off, because they pretty much wait until they are out of options and it kills their price. I thought Montreal would get more for Halak, but they couldn't. Surprised with just how aggressive Nashville was today they didn't move their backup.
Columbus- Howson during the Jack Johnson press conference said something like this. "We're not going to look for goaltending help this season. It needs to get better and we know that. We will look at the situation in the Summer". Then said, "But Mason looked good in the last 5 to 6 games and we will look at him as well". Also went onto say that if a offer came up for a goalie from the time he had the press conference to the deadline, he would have pulled the trigger.
Also, why make a trade for a goaltender now? Might as well stick with what we have and get the 1st/2nd overall pick and like he said, look at the situation in the Summer.

I have been taught on this forum that having a good backup behind a Vezina candidate workhorse is essential to make a cup run.
Lindback was probably an untouchable unless he could be traded for an upgrade on him like Linback + for Nabokov?

If you want to secure the first overall pick then not getting a goalie is a pretty damn good idea and at this point, why would the Jackets take the chance of getting a goalie and have them catch fire? I don't even think they should pursue one in a Nash deal. Load up on picks/prospects and draft/develop your own. Goaltending from within makes way more sense.

Well thats exactly what i was saying in all these deadline goalies-to- Tampa/Columbus proposal thread. I even started a ''guide to the deadline proposal matchmaking'' to help people make more realist proposal.

Two words: Boyd Devereaux. You wanna see what one player can do to crush a fans hope of getting a better pick. Look him up and how he crushed Leafs nation. We will never forgive him.
