Btw. is there any chance the French Canadians will separate one day completely from the rest of the country (and then have their own team of course)? I don't have much insight into canadian political scene right now, but I know there are some people who would do it.
hey now there's a thought, split canada in two and have two teams
I don't know how is that so laughable. Britain has currently 4 independent soccer teams (England, Scotland, Wales, N.Ireland) and they are not even the best in soccer.

Pro separation is polling at about 39% in Quebec the last tiem I checked, which is a far cry from the 49.42% in the last referendum in 95. No, they had their chance to leave, and since they didn't then, I don't think they ever will.
In my opinion, not including the Czechs and Slovaks, I'd rank the current possible men's Olympic hockey teams something like:
Canada
US
Sweden
Russia
Finland
Switzerland
Some people might say Russia is too low, but at the moment (i.e. 2010 Olympics, plus whatever changes you'd make) they're a team of flashy forwards with bad dmen, sketchy goaltending, and poor chemisty, I would even consider putting them below Finland as a team.
As for where I'd slot in a fictional Czechoslovakian team, I'd say better than Sweden (who are in a bit of a transition right now, awesome young dmen, but they need time to mature), but I wouldn't have them quite on the level of the Americans, who have great depth and just so much speed, hustle and 2-way play all throughout their lineup. So IMO it'd be something like this:
Canada
US Czechoslovakia
Sweden
Russia
Finland
Switzerland
Marian Hossa - Tomas Plekanec - Marian Gaborik
Jaromir Jagr - David Krejci - Jakub Voracek
Milan Michalek - Martin Hanzal - Ales Hemsky
Tomas Fleischmann - Patrik Elias - Martin Havlat
(Milan Hejduk)
Lubomir Visnovsky - Zdeno Chara
Zbynek Michalek - Andrej Mezsaros
Tomas Kaberle - Rostislav Klesla
(Jan Hejda)
Ondrej Pavelec
Jaroslav Halak
(Tomas Vokoun)
HM: Radim Vrbata, Jiri Hudler, Michal Neuvirth, Martin Erat, Vaclav Prospal, Pavel Kubina, Marek Zidlicky, Jaroslav Spacek, Roman Hamrlik, Peter Budaj, Ladislav Smid, Milan Jurcina, Andrej Sekera, Radek Dvorak, Michal Handzus, Roman Polak, Vladimir Sobotka
OK, this topic is never ending story, nevertheless i just want to know... Would this team be a contender for gold this year?
Marek Tvrdoň - Petr Holík - Tomáš Jurčo
Jiří Sekáč - Tomáš Filippi - Dominik Uher
Radek Faksa - Tomáš Hertl - Petr Straka
Jakub Culek - Matúš Chovan - Dmitrij Jaškin
Richard Mráz
Martin Marinčin - David Musil
Jiří Říha - Martin Gernát
Adam Jánošík - Daniel Krejčí
Bohumil Jank

Can't argue with that. Let's take Team Sweden and then add Koivu, Rinne and finnish Sisu, and all will be fine.
The Nordic countries should separate from the EU anyway and form an independent federal union. Denmark and Norway would quickly catch up in hockey thanks to Finnish goalie coaching and Swedish junior program and then we would not only be an important economical block, we would be a hockey super power. *starts writing a draft to political leaders*

btw. I hope I will never see anything like EU hockey team in my life. I know I couldn't cheer for something like that.

That's not really what he said, if that's what u meant
But hey, while we're on it, why not something like USA/Canada - Sweden/Finland- Czech/slovakia/russia team up in some tourney they can hold each 4 years

Yeah, we already had Kalmar, this time we can make it work, with democracy.
ahh ok, but don't worry, some EU hockey will never go thru
Yep even if EU becomes a single country it will still have separate representation for different "states" in international competitions like the UK (football). You can't compare Europe with the US or Canada.

Hey. How about splitting the US into 50 states, and have each state have their own national team.
Who would have been the strongest force? New York? Detroit? Minnesota maybe? Could anyone of the states be a real contender in the olympics f.e.
