This is good for the Flyers. That playoff format would have been bad for us.

yeah but our travel within the division is just as great right now.

With only 4 teams being able to make the playoffs from the division it would be very hard with the quality of teams in our division.

I can't say I was ever fully on board with the idea to begin with. No great loss, IMO.

It's simple, they weren't consulted originally. For all we know, the players are fine with it, but they didn't get a say, so Don Fehr told the player reps to put the kibosh on it. We don't even know where all 30 teams are playing next season.

Owners want realignment? Go ahead and loosen that cap a little bit or shave a year off restricted free agency first.

realignment isn't dead, the NHLPA just wants to get something out of it.

edit: but it looks like we definitely won't see the new format for next season as the NHL has to get the schedule sorted out.

I respectfully disagree here. With the way things are right now, I'd imagine it'd be pretty much lock we'd be in the top 4 alongside PIT, WAS, NYR/NJ. NYI and CAR are the two teams that would be screwed. And if you mean the playoff format would be bad because in the first 2 rounds we'd face divisional teams, well, that's the part I loved the most. Getting to see rivalries and wars in full effect with NYR and PIT, and bigger ones grow with WAS is just what I'd want to see for the first 2 rounds of the playoffs for years.

But that's just me.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. The next CBA meeting is going to be intense.

I liked the realignment plan. I hope there is no lockout or strike or anything. Ugh.

Excuse making by the league. When the Nordiques moved to Colorado it wasn't made "official" until August, and still found a way to realign Colorado to the Western Conference for their first year.

Ewww...I hate that. Easiest route doesn't give you a better chance to win. You could have an easy route then get to the finals and not be prepared for the type of competition you face. Place I don't wanna hear any ******** from HFBoards with the whole "You had an easy route to the finals blah blah blah".

I want the team to go through a war. Like a literal ****ing war. Against battle tested teams. So when they win it it'll be that much more epic. Imagine going through the Penguins, Rangers, Bruins in route to the cup finals. That'd be epic.

You want a literal war? You want most of the team being shot and killed? You want terrible atrocities to occur? That'd be a memorable play-offs for sure.

PHILADELPHIA – Under the NHL’s new alignment plan, the Ottawa Senators would have been one of the winners: in a seven-team conference with the bulk of their games in the Eastern time zone.

But Senators goalie Alex Auld, the team’s NHLPA representative, said the big picture revealed some potentially huge disparities.
There was the fear that travel would become even worse than it is now for teams in the two western conferences, and that it would also be more difficult for them to make the playoffs, since their conferences would be comprised of eight teams each, one more than each of the two eastern conferences.

That’s why the NHLPA decided not to endorse the league’s realignment plan by the NHL-imposed deadline of Friday.

In response, the league withdrew the plan and announced that next season would be played until the current format.

“We’d asked for more information on how the schedule would be drawn up, the effect of travel, things like that, and the league wasn’t very forthcoming with much information,” said Auld, before Saturday’s game against the Flyers.

“And the other big issue was that it wasn’t an even playing field as far as every player having the same chance of making the playoffs.

keep the 4 divisions
playoff format change: TOP 16 teams
1 plays 16
2 plays 15 etc..
any team plays against any team regardless of division and stanley cup can be
anyone against anyone

example: philly vs pitts in the stanley cup finals (which will never happen with current format) would be EPIC !!!!

l)

change points structure
3 points regulation win
2 points ot win
1 point shootout win
0 for losing in any fashion
)
(im sure this will raise much debate) hehe

It's coming anyway ... this is just the NHLPA trying to get a negotiating point where there shouldn't be one. I hope the NHL fights them on this, but more than likely the NHL will just give them the Olympics for approval.

It works too well for too many teams for the NHL to backtrack.

That won't happen because it's not fair. The schedules are too different.
