I don't make production predictions.

On a team playing a style that suits the top end talent on this team I definitely have point per game expectations for Semin, even with 2nd line ice time, substandard line mates, and less PP time than his talent deserves though.

On a team playing the garbage trap style they have played since Boudreau instituted it after the losing streak last year and Hunter has continued with since taking over I wouldn't expect Gretzky or Lemieux to produce anywhere close to their level of normal expectations let alone the likes of Semin.

Maybe they are going to go with 8 D in an effort to stop the bleeding...?

I think George is looking at all his options at RD with Green's failed comeback attempt. He might as well start by looking at the in house ones. Wouldn't you?

Fact is players given a chance in the NHL, will sometimes exceed expectations. Playing on a strong team in a smart complimentary pairing, a top 15 goalie at your back, suddenly running around in the AHL trying hard to make a wowwie and not an whooops, is all in the past. Sure adrenaline may help you over achieve, but being in the right situation can go a long ways as well. Look at Sarge, moved up into the bigs and played largely with Green Nick and Ovi - a plus fiddy parlayed payday.

Suddenly you perform the way you were expected to when you were that touted prospect. If I were him I would bring the O, try for a big hit, and consider the big splash, drop the mitts and throw a slew of those rapid rabbit punches.

Kundratek should have gotten a cup of coffee in Manhattan, but for whatever reason never got a chance. The callup and start might be nothing more than a reward for an attitude adjustment and a clear signal that this franchise is different.

And Whyno finally clarifies everything (even if was the obvious assumption):

simple fact that backstrom was going to miss a game and doesnt have to miss anymore gives mcphee a roster spot.

it still doesnt say much for erskine and schultz standing with the team

The fourth liners need competition, too.

Indeed, at least assuming they're healthy.

Orlov-Kundratek is going to be an interesting pairing to watch. Wonder how much icetime DH gives them, and what matchups (not that matchups will mean much with the Pens lineup being what it is, but still).

EDIT: Or maybe that's not a pairing, nevermind.

Wait, so...

Retroactively since last tuesday, 7 day minimum... meaning if he were okay to play he could've played today? Do we start freaking out about him yet?

Have any of the reporters even talked to Schultz and or Hunter about his lack of playing time? Does that giant soft beanpole even give a **** he's not playing?

We need a new center fast

Kundratek evidently played well for Hartford. Sjogren did not win any praise from our regular Hershey posters. I don't see the parallel.

Fortunately, McPhee is excellent at identifying talent at the center position and acquiring it. Sigh.

Just so I'm clear on the D

1. Wash puts Backstrom on LTIR (why not Green?)
2. Green's not practising nor is he on LTIR.
3. The new fellow is practicing with Hamrlik.
4. Erskine and Schultz are healthy scratches.
5. So D pairs tonight...........

Alzner - Carlson
Orlov - Wideman
Hamr - New Czech

So who gets the 2nd pairing minutes?

Who's on first?
Who's on third?

Did you mean Hershey (not Hartford)?

I don't think Sjogren played poorly for Hershey, fwiw.

More Kundratek: Given he's Czech and some other stuff, I thought he might be a Walsh client. Confirmation this morning via Walsh's twitter. So that trade was 2 Walsh clients looking for a fresh start. Kundratek and Bouchard.

Backstrom is on IR not LTIR. Backstrom has been out longer so 7 day IR means he can return as soon as he's ready and there's a roster spot on 23 player active roster.

My bad - thanks for clarifying.

Seems like something else is going to give though.

No Sjogren was a completely different story. Since he left the Bears have been playing a lot better and if im not mistaken, a lot of people were always uncertain about him leaving

Our favorite reporter Chuck Gormley got Schultz to talk:

Chuck Gormley
#Caps Jeff Schultz on getting scratched for 12th time in 14 games: "I want to play. That's kind of the bottom line."

Would love to see Chuck interview Schultz, it would be so entertaining.

forward lines

I don't understand why a player tied for second in goal scoring [ Chimera ] isn,t given a chance to continue scoring by putting him with offensive players. To me, it doesn't matter if he is just lucky or not, but if I were the the coach I would ride it out and give him that opportunity.
