Just please don't take on Gustavsson. We dodged a bullet there.
Gustavsson is being screwed over by their goaltending coach. If he wasn't being forced into playing butterfly style, he'd be far better than he is there. But we don't need him with our depth anyways.

Should we go after Schenn over JvR? Absolutely.

Will he be cheaper? Hell no.

$49,693,775 = Projected Cap at the end of the season

Dallas has 15 forwards right now because of injuries to Morrow and Dowell. Dowell should return in about 2 weeks from the injury. As of March 6th, the remaining salary that should be subtracted from the cap for Garbutt or Petersen:

$102,054 = Garbutt
$134,054 = Petersen

I assume one of these 2 players is gone. Garbutt is the easier to just assign to the AHL, but he might have earned a NHL spot. After subtracting one of those players:

$49,591,721 = Projected w/out Garbutt
$49,559,721 = Projected w/out Petersen

That puts Dallas over the floor by:

$1,291,721 = Over cap w/out Garbutt
$1,259,721 = Over cap w/out Petersen

Which means Dallas can trade this annual cap hit number without going under the floor (40 days left in a 185 day season):

$5,974,210 = w/out Garbutt
$5,826,210 = w/out Petersen

If Dallas hypothetically traded Ott for Raymond, you'd subtract Raymond's smaller annual cap hit from Ott's. The remainder would come off of the number above.

I think Garbutt has earned his spot on this team. He brings energy and plays much bigger than he is.

Garbutt definitely earned his place on the 4th. So much energy on that line now.

What about an alternate to JVR? We know Toronto is interested in Ott and are planning on being active.

Could something based around Ott for Kulemin make sense?

We'd be buying low while selling high. Kulemin would make the team younger, more skilled, and bring some of the same things to the table Neal did. Burke would get his Burke-type player back. It wouldn't be a selling deal, it would be a hockey trade. Thoughts?

Would you rather have Kulemin than JVR?

What about any of the Leafs young Dmen instead?

Kulemin's nice, but I'd press for Schenn more. I don't really know what I'd add for Schenn, but no way I'd add more than a 2nd for Kulemin.

Goligoski - Schenn
Fistric - Larsen
Daley - Robidas
Souray

But I'm not sure Ott + Glennie + 2nd would get it done.

Would you want one over the other isn't really an appropriate question. He's offering a more realistic offer where Dallas isn't having to include the farm to get a deal done.

So assuming Glennie could be part of a package for JVR, the better question is would you rather have Kulemin and Glennie or just JVR.

No. But I'm trying to think of things that wouldn't require so many spinning plates in the air to get done. After all, we've heard that the Flyers are "reluctant" to deal JVR, and rightfully so.

BTW .... I'd be a bit apprehensive about Kulemin's contract status. Is it fair to stereotype Russian's? Probably not, but his contract is up this summer (RFA), and he could just decide to go back to Russia.

That seems like too big of a risk for me.

I'm a bigger fan of JVR than I am of Kulemin and I'm not at all sold on Glennie, so I may lean towards still going after JVR.

I'm one that's hesitant to let Otter go, I think he brings a lot of character and dealing that for unproven talent isn't a guaranteed win for us. I still prefer the JVR deal though and if Philly wanted to that, I would have a tough time not puling the trigger - even if Toronto was offering the other.

Any more for JVR and I don't think I do it. Some were including Nemeth or Oleksiak and there's no way I do that. I would then PREFER the Kulemin deal, but I dont know if I necessarily do it - in fact I dont think I do. I know he popped 30 last year but what is he - Sergei Berezin? Nikolai Borschevsky? Tough call with those types of guys.

If its Ott, Glennie and 2nd then pull it because it would be stupid not to do it.

He really does't seem like the type, I have never heard or even considered the flight risk issue with him. The other thing with him is despite his weak offensive numbers he is among the hardest working Leafs night in night out. He's one player I would gladly take off them.
