grrrr

He is way to defensive minded as a coach....this team will have a tough time scoring.

Don't know what I think about this yet. Something had to change, and I don't think it was the players. The team will definitely be defensively responsible now. I just hope this isn't a return to the Andy Murray days.

Curious to know if this got sped up due to the rumour that Ron Hexstall is reportedly in talks to become GM with the BJ's and he would want hitchcock back

I'd rather them do something than nothing at all, as we can't afford to keep losing. Something had to be done, and Payne was the odd man out.

Enjoy? Not sure what you guys are expecting, but I have a feeling he learned from his mistakes in Columbus and will adapt his style a bit. That or he'll be the same iron-headed stubborn-as-a-mule guy we had and you'll wonder where all your offense went. I wish you luck (except against us of course!)

I'm not entirely opposed to firing Payne, but Hitch certainly didn't do a whole helluva lot in Columbus and his brand of hockey is, shall we say, quite dry. Young players in Columbus didn't quite develop properly during his tenure with them and we've got a handful that I don't want to see go to waste.

Not to say I'm an expert on Hitch though, so maybe I'm a little off the mark. Still, this seems like Andy Murray hockey - version 2.0.

They played well both games against Vancouver (I'm assuming you're a Canucks fan/watched those games) but they haven't been good or consistent enough. I'm not sure that people who aren't Blues fans realize how important of a season this is for the organization. The rebuild began a while ago and the past two seasons were painfully lackluster. Doug Armstrong said he wasn't afraid to make changes if things weren't going well, I just didn't expect this to be so soon.

Question: How safe are the jobs of Mellanby, Shaw, Bennett? I'd hate to see Mellanby or Shaw go.

Hitchcock is a good coach. Defensively inclined to be sure. The stories of him ruining prospects are largely bunk. Is Filatov ripping it up with Ottawa? Have the Jackets prospects busted out and done anything of note since he has been gone? Brassard isnt faring any better and is arguably worse than when Hitchcock was there.

He was one of the most successful midget coaches during his time in Sherwood Park and he enjoyed success with the Kamloops Blazers of the chl before going to the nhl and ultimately winning a cup with the Stars. Those Dallas teams were no joke.

That being said, I think he will only be as good as the tools that are given to him. But you guys have quite a few good young up and coming players.

This is pretty much how I feel, although I hold (some of) the players just as accountable as Payne for the team's lackluster start. I will say that the idea of Tarasenko joining the club next year with Hitch at the helm has me a little worried...I know, I'm thinking too far ahead, but still.

Wow. Still trying to take it in.

Could be a Murray like hire.

I didn't anticipate this, I thought Payne has been decent.

Ugh. I thought this team looked better when the games where wide open. I don't know if they'll be better in a defensive system.

According to NHL.com, "Payne finished his tenure in St. Louis with a 67-55-15 record."

Very quick, got to wonder if Hulziser is already pulling strings behind the scenes. Why didnt they do this last Sunday, you know before we had a week off? There was a friggin interview with Armstrong today in the paper and nothing at it made it look like Payne was on the outs. Wonder if it is something with Payne? Odd timing as well, 8 on a Sunday? Even national people seem to be very surprised by the move.

Never thought a ton of Payne, but Hitchcock is no better. Granted, he might be able to get this team to play a little tougher and more defensively responsible, but he could hurt our offense just as much. Maybe a little structure is what this team could use, but still very, very weird timing by the Blues.

Last season, we saw how good the team could be under Payne's leadership before the injuries happened.

We also saw what he did with a team that quit on Murray.

I don't like this one bit.

Don't disagree with a shakeup (actually liked Payne), but not Hitchcock. I really think that this was more sending a message to the players. It was definately not Payne's fault they have played inconsistent.
