Backstrom's point totals dropped because Boudreau switched to a defense first system. Everyone's point totals dropped. This year, he's on pace to top 90 points again, despite Ovechkin's sub-par year.

Kessel has reached 60 points twice. This year, he's shooting more than 5 percentage points higher than his career average. He'll come back down to earth. He's also a winger, which is a much less important position than center.

To say you'd rather have Kessel than Backstrom is blatant homerism. No objective person would take Kessel given this choice.
No homerism at all, I just love his game. I didn't think he was worth 2 firsts and a 2nd when the deal first took place, but now I see just how good he is. We still haven't seen the best of him yet either. When he gets transferred to center(his natural position) and gets better line mates, your statement will be complete homerism on your part

I can see one of Col/WSH 1st and Eakins being involved for maybe Grabo and Franson.

It's pointless to talk about Kessel and Backstrom, two players who aren't going anywhere.

I'd tend to always expect something low level and fairly boring, not a big deal. Perhaps Schultz to the Leafs for a pick. He isn't playing under Hunter.

He has 10 points in his last 7 -- his best stretch this season.

Ovechkin has 11 in his last 7 -- riding a 7 game point streak.

Denying Ovechkin helps pad Backstroms point totals is like arguing the sky is green.

I could see something like this, expect a forward coming to the leafs instead of Schultz or a similar package going there way involving a d man

Blatant homerism - the GTA is the only place in the entire world you would find someone who thinks Kessel carries more value then Backstrom AINEC.

So Backstrom being miles ahead of him offensively and defensively doesn't matter? And by the way, Kessel's season so far - 46 points in 40 games. Backstrom's season so far while Ovechkin's been sucking - 42 points in 38 games. Even in Kessel's best season, he's barely ahead of Backstrom. Call me when Kessel's reached Backstrom's rookie point totals, because he still hasn't done it yet.

Yeah, because Backstrom was totally sucking before that, when he only had 32 points in 31 games (and Ovechkin had 22 in 31 games).

Just like Washington is the only place that doesn't get that if you subtract Ovechkin, Backstrom doesn't really have much on Kessel if anything at all

All of you Leaf fans say you don't want Semin because of his work ethic, but do you realize he is EXACTLY like Kessel? When Kessel wants to play, he is great, same for Semin. But, neither of them constantly produce how they can. Why? Because they choose not to play their best at times. Realize what you're saying when you say it people.

[QUOTE=Braden Carlzner;42077401]Backstroms worst season and Kessels best season were the same year.
Backstrom had 1 more point.

Yea but who was Backstrom playing with again. What's the guy's name? You know that guy from Russia? You know, the Mr. Big guy with no teeth. What's his name again?
Oh yeah, Alexander Ovechkin!

You put Crosby with Kessel and tell me how many points he has?

Cuz that's the equivalent. Once Ovechkins production went down, do did Backstrom's. Coincidence? No more easy assists and easy points for Backstrom. Yet Kessel has gotten better every year playing with scrubs until this year. And once he got a half decent player(lupul) to play with the guy is a top 5 scorer in this league.

A Toronto fan said that you have an abundance of bottom 6 d-man but I would agree the only parts that I can see GMGM moving are Perrault and / or Schultz.

I'm 3000 miles away from Washington so I guess I'm the exception
