Good skater, excellent stickhandler, can make highlight reel plays with regularity, somewhat poor hockey IQ. Likes to work off the LW boards on the PP.

Twitter all ablaze about possible Hemsky for Ellerby trade.
Aside from being injury prone, could you share a description of his pluses and minuses. Aprreciate it..
Good luck the second half.
Cheers.
If you could do the same for Ellerby, I'd appreciate it.
Ales Hemsky:
The good:
- Great skater
- Hands are some of the best in the league
- If given the chance, can take over a game.
- Great vision for passing
- Worked his ass off to become a average defensive player
The bad:
- After 2 season ending shoulder surgeries, he doesn't really go into dirty areas as much
- We've tried to find him the perfect playing mate unsuccessfully for the past 4-5 years. He really doesn't have consistent chemistry with anyone apart from one Shawn Horcoff.
- Sometimes makes poor plays which question his Hockey IQ
- Injury prone
His recent form might be human nature playing for this team rather a reflection of his abilities. The has, before this season, given everything for this team. He went into dirty areas, got obliterated and got straight back up. This team sucking for another year has probably left him sick of losing.

isn't ellerby essentially florida's 7th dman this year? if thats all we're being offered for hemsky, his trade value is even worse than i thought it was (and i didn't think it was very high, lol)
I just watched some youtube video's on him. Guy is big, strong, and can kick some ass if need be. Not many fights on there but he dominated both of them albeit one was against a much smaller but game opponent. That said unless this guy has some offensive upside I'm not sure that this is a trade that I make right now.

Don't they have a really good D core though? If this trade has actually been proposed I wonder if Tambo tries to get them to offer up a 1st instead of a 2nd? I'm not sure how much more value this guy has than Teubert does. That said I know next to nothing about the player so I'm basing that on stats and draft pedigree.

Thanks!
Ellerby is a smooth skating up and coming dman. He is very responsible with the puck. He is our 7th only because we are so loaded with dmen. Some on our board argue he should be 6th based on play over gudbranson.
Personally I would not make this trade as a panther fan as I think Ellerby will become a top 6 dmen soon; except we are so decimated in injuries at forward and so desperate to make the playoffs after a decade of disaster, I understand the basis of it.

Does Samsanov still play for the Panthers? Too lazy to look but I do remember they had decent chemistry during his short stint with Edmonton back in '06.

So what are his strengths and weaknesses? Hemsky would probably thrive there, out of the media spotlight.
I remember that the Oilers were very high on him back in 2007, but that was the Kevin Prendergast regime.
Stu probably knows him well since he's a former Blazer.
I'd be OK with this deal. I'd try to get Florida to throw in an AHL defenceman too, but Ellerby for a struggling, injury prone, pending UFA isn't too bad in my mind.

He sounds a LOT like Smid from what I've been reading. If you guys add your 1st and we add our 3rd, I'd do it. Likely even with a 2nd like op suggested
If things were to work out perfectly, teubert, ellerby, klefbom, smid, Gilbert, Whitney(if healthy), would look pretty good if the young guys developed into good defensemen with a bit of offense.

Don't forget Petry, Musil and our Slovaks. We have lots of talent if even SOME of them turn out close to their potential
Do you think the Rangers would trade Dylan McIlrath for Hemsky? McIlrath is a few years off according to the prospect bio, but it says he is big and mean. Anybody seen him play is a player or another Plante?
I am not a huge fan of this idea. I think we need better passing and puck moving on the back end. Who in our system looks like a potential 40p+ D? Ellerby certainly wouldn't be the answer.
