What was the reasoning behind the implementation of that rule, where you have to pas a guy you signed off the street through waivers?

The reason I heard was that it stops teams from hiding players in Europe with the promise that they'll sign them as soon as the playoffs start to a ridiculous pro-rated salary when there's no more cap to worry about. There's probably more reasons.

Well, Garon, our "backup turned #1", just went down with probably a groin injury so it wouldn't surprise me if Tampa claimed Turco.

With TB melting down in front of Rollie again, I expect this to happen.

The rule long predates the cap.
AIUI, it was instituted after Reijo Ruotsalainen (sp?) signed in Edmonton in 1986 after his Euro season was over to join Gretzky et al for the late season & playoffs.

Agreed, maybe with Crawford struggling the Hawks or Jackets with Mason will put in a claim.

He wouldn't be able to play for Tampa though would he? (or anyone besides BOS for that matter)

He would be able to play in regular season but if Tampa claimed a playoff spot he would them be ineligible.

According to Dreger and McKenzie he wouldn't be able to play any games for any team that claimed him. Not regular season or playoffs.

What would happen if a team had like 4-5 of their goalies injured? Would a guy like Turco still be out for the playoffs? Who could they sign?

If Boston can't dress at least 2 of their 5 goalies because of injuries or other inavailability than Turco can dress (and play) in the playoffs.

Ty Conklin on re-entry
Quote:
Detroit has recalled veteran backup Ty Conklin on emergency basis from Grand Rapids. However, he must first clear re-entry waivers by 12 p.m. EDT on Wednesday. If nobody claims Conklin, he will join the team in New York where he will start against the Rangers.

I will help get this thread to 1000, Strachan deserves the recognition. Not many have worked their way from the echl to the NHL. He is a pretty big player who can skate fairly well for his size. He's lacks any offensive ability, but he can drop the gloves. Fine 6-7 defenseman

It's the waiver thread. I don't think it's going to be locked unless something really weird happens...

Russell used to be a pretty good prospect. I could see a team battling injuries claim him if they're desperate enough.

St.Louis should claim Russell so they'd have their very own pair of twins.

Quick, somebody claim Syvret, if he ends up playing for the Blues I might be sick.
