Ehh... He wouldn't have been waived if he played tough. Wild fans would have liked to see him play tougher - find a niche for himself.

The kid has work ethic and size. Unfortunately, he lacks almost everything else capable of becoming a serviceable NHL player.

I'd really like to see him succeed elsewhere... Just not Edmonton.

Ok, I thought he might be a good pick up for the Oil but admittedly, I don't follow Minny at all. He sounds like JF Jacques by your report and heaven knows the Oilers don't need any more of those. And after a very accurate report on how lousy Barker was (/IS!) by Wild followers, I'm inclined to take this at face value (unlike Anaheim fans who said Sutton was useless and didn't belong in the NHL anymore. He doesn't belong in the top 4 anymore but he's still quite a serviceable #6 on most NHL squads...#3 on the Oil currently, unfortunately).

I guess we never know. Maybe a change of team will help find his game

Gillies played very well in Houston's Calder Cup finals run last year(7 goals tied for team lead). There were hopes that he'd slot in the Wild's 3rd line this year and be a good role player who could elevate his game in the playoffs, for years to come.

I'm sure the Wild hope he clears so, like Scandella, he can go to Houston and rediscover his mojo. He just has no confidence right now.

He could still develop into a useful player.

Why was Gillies waived? Thought he was having a good year, at least physically abusing people.

Gillies is a player that just can't put it all together.

MTL has to pick him up...

Everything we need right now. Young, physical and fast.

MTL will pick him up if he's still there.

There's probably a reason a team that is for a playoff spot is waiving a guy and it's not out of the goodness of their heart to help someone out.

While I don't disagree with this at all, I think Minnesota is hoping to get him to the AHL for some seasoning. A team that's unlikely to make the playoffs this year (Edmonton, Anaheim, Columbus, NY Islanders) could make a claim and work with Gillies on the bottom line for the rest of this year and see if he's worth hanging onto. I'm thinking he will clear waivers, but he's a guy a non-playoff team should be all over to see if he's serviceable or not.

some guys just benefit from a change of scenery. Gillies will be a good addition for a team looking for a 4th liner with size and speed. Unfortunately for Gillies the Wild have a bunch of bottom 6 players who were outplaying Gillies, but that doesn't mean his skill set won't be useful to another team. With his age size speed and good attitude he can be a useful player to a team looking to add depth to their bottom 6

From everything we're hearing out of St. Paul, it sounds like the intent is to get him ice time in Houston so he can "get his confidence back."

I won't be surprised if he's claimed, and will only be mildly surprised if he makes it to Houston. He's been pretty bad this year, but it's a little difficult to judge a player's potential when he's only getting 6 minutes of ice time.

the reason gillies never stuck in the first place was confidence. It's amazing the difference it can make--Bulmer came to camp this year and almost forced Fletcher to play him in the NHL solely on confidence. A skinny 18 year old kid destined to be a bottom six energy guy straight out of juniors was playing with more swagger than everyone else out there combined. When Risebrough decided to keep Gillies up after his draft, you could tell his head was swimming. Bulmer probably doesn't know what's going on half the time on the ice but the difference lies in their reaction to uncertainty: Gillies starts and stops while he tries to figure it out and Bulmer just says "option B" and sticks with whatever action he started.

Gillies is a great kid, though. Very hard worker, and tough in the sense that he is a physical player but not in that he fights or anything. Brent Burns said he reminded him (attitude wise) of himself, if that gives you any clue. Not decisive. Once he figures it out, he'll be a beast, but there's always the chance he'll never figure it out.

Why do people think he is a physical player? He is not just a tough last name

he likes hitting. he's just so worried about being out of position he ruins most of the chances he gets, though. indecisive hitter = bad hitter.
he doesn't fight, but he is definitely a "take the body" guy.

Does Eager, at 29, qualify as 'young'? Cuz you can take him for free. He does all the things you're looking for.

The thing I think that Montreal might claim him is that, he is as big as Engqvist. Montreal management was hoping Engqvist would work out. He didn't have the best tries while he had his chances. I think Gillies cold be what we could want on our bottom 6 he can play wing and center. He is more aggressive than Engqvist IMO.

Would be a key pic up for youth and size and help the team going forward.

With question marks with what might happen at deadline with Moen. It would be nice to get grit in case he might leave at deadline for a prospect or pick.

don't claims go by the standings? if so, I can see the habs putting in a claim for him. they tried to claim comeau but at the time the flames were lower in the standings
