Arguably, one could include Rusty Klesla and his 8 games, since that's where the legends began. Especially since that supposedly was why King was fired.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Well, he had his whole post-draft year minus 8 NHL games. That's when he was named THN's best prospect leaguewide; consider, in addition to everyone else who had been previously drafted, that would put him above Heatley as well.

In his first full year (2001-02), he was 8th on the team in both goals and points, and was a team-best -6 (only including players who got actual playing time). He was also 4th among defensemen in playing time per game, so he wasn't exactly being thrown to the wolves there.

In 2002-03, at the time that Dave King was fired, Klesla had played 39 games and had 0 goals but 10 assists. He played 33 more games under MacLean, with 2 goals and 4 assists.

I'll maintain that Klesla looked pretty good under King and had spurts of greatness under Hitchcock. Under MacLean and Gallant, it was enough to make one question why he was in the NHL at all. There are those whose opinions I respect greatly who theorize that Klesla was actually never destined to be an All-Star level player, but a high-end serviceable one. In that case, "rushing" versus "not rushing" wouldn't have made one iota of difference. Look at Alex Picard, who was brought along very slowly every step of the way...and he's never scored an NHL goal.

I was thinking of Brule.

Post-draft, he was sent back to the WHL before triggering the first year of his contract. He dominated there and clearly had nothing to prove, so he was with Columbus the next year. He wasn't rushed in the sense of being thrown out there on the first line; he got about 10 minutes a game.

It's worth pointing out two things about that season.
- He actually got more playing time under Ken Hitchcock (who most regard as "bad with young players") than under Gerard Gallant, and
- That season is still the second-highest scoring of his NHL career

His problems in Columbus were twofold. For one thing, what he did show only was in small amounts and very sporadically at that. For another, he didn't show any signs of improvement from game to game, week to week, or month to month.

The fact that he's done next to nothing since moving on would seem to indicate that the problem is his, not Columbus'.

Brule wasn't just "sent back to the WHL before triggering the first year of his contract" like most prospects. He was injured twice, the first for 18 games with a collarbone, and the second a broken leg for 18 more games, before being sent back down.

It should not have taken a rocket scientist to understand that shoving a guy that was basically a 5'10" power forward in the WHL into the NHL at 18 was probably not a great idea.

That said, yes, Brule's inability to live up to expectations is not exclusively the fault of the Blue Jackets.

Title is wrong, Brett MacLean is now back in the PHO farm system after a early season waiver pickup by WPG and doing fine again down there by the stats. Brett McLean is with CHI and the one that has been put on waivers.

Made me do a double take, I was trying to figure out how CHI got PHO MacLean's rights.

maybe Montreal can pick up Brett MacLean and give him a try on the Eller/Kostitsyn line.

Couldn't hurt our chances much, and he has talent. maybe a regular playing time in the NHL would see him start to hit his stride?

Poor Yip. Hustle, hustle, lose an edge. Repeat ad nauseum. Good guy, works hard, but is not NHL material at this point.

Face it. No one with the last name Yip is ever going to succeed in the NHL. NEVER.

I hope the Jets claim both Brett McLean and Brett MacLean off waivers in the same season.

So does McLean mutual termination mean that Hawks get an open contract slot with regards to 50 rule?

I hope he does well in the AHL. Hard worker, solid shooter too I think. Just no skill.

When Yip and Yelle played on the same line during 09/10that was on par with Foote and Finger for all-time Avalanche best name combos.

My memory may be fuzzy, but at one point weren't both Foote and Finger injured? Foote with a hand injury and Finger with a foot injury?

Naw, Finger had a hand injury and Foote had a knee or hip injury iirc.

I loved the Foote and Finger jokes. In the backdoor. In the slot. In the crease.

Couldn't hurt, we already have 4 AHL forwards in the lineup and one on IR.

When Warren Peters is your top line center you claim Yip. It seems like he would fit Yeo's system as well.
