Jacques Martin- Newest Scout for Habs

Confirmed by Darren Dreger via TSNRadio990

Will be one of the highest paid Scouts in the NHL

also

@Starr690: As per @DarrenDreger Jacques Martin will be doing some scouting for Habs Thought of sending him to WJHC but Gauthier felt timing wasn't good

FML, Just FML, I hated JM as a coach, as a GM just any form of JM should be gone from this team, this pathetic taking ppl you fire on as scouts is horrible.

I'm so disgusted.

He does know his hockey. I'm sure it can't be as bad as you're making it out to be.

So I guess we will have a team full of Tom Pyatt's in the future, fantastic. I'm really happy Molson is keeping everyone

I cant really judge him as a scout because I dont know anything about his choices for draft eligible players.

Yeah I'm disgusted too. Oh wait, no I'm not.

Come on man, you make it sound like they hired a pedophile to work at a garderie or something. He's a very bright hockey person, he has a winning record as a coach and though he may have a boring style and may not be the best suited person for being a coach in the first place he's a brilliant hockey mind. The way he views the game and interprets things is on a much higher level than most people. He's definitely suitable for a scouting job. Plus as a human being I've never heard anything but good things.

"Disgusted" is more than hyperbole, it's at that next level of overreacting.

How can we possibly hope to make a change in this org, if we keep giving sympathy hires? We are trying to steer away from this mentality, and then hire the very guy we fired to find players, and he'll be finding his type of players too not the gallaghers, or the beaulieus. I didn't like him as a GM in Florida, and I hated him as a Coach here, I can't possibly see the silver lining in him being a scout, hes not made for our team.

You either cut the cord PG or you don't bother firing ppl at all.

Well he isnt the headscout so really it still comes down to timmins and whoever the GM may be. Perhaps JM will give perspective on the Q players and they find a gem. Ill wait to lambast him after there is something to do it for. I can understand your view though.

Relax people. The Habs are already paying him the same amount, whether he sits at home doing nothing or actually goes and watches some games and provides some scouting reports. No one is suggesting he is our new head scout or gets to decide who we pick in the first round next year. It's just another opinion on some of the players that he's had a chance to watch.

He's been around the league for 25 years, he might know a thing or two about talent. At least they're getting some use, no matter how irrelevant, out of the salary they're paying the guy for the rest of this season.

Maybe, and I could be blowing this way out of proportion, and I appreciate your objectivity, however I didn't want JM near this team with a 10 foot poll, and now hes in the one part of our mgmt that was alright for once, our Scouting. Now even with Timmins I am worried some how that Timmins is given the plank to walk and and lose him to free agency, while Martin gets promoted.

And hes an Amateur Scout on top of all that, not a Pro Scout, when was the last time he did amateur scouting?

This whole move doesn't seem like "Whats good for the team" move, it seems like "My poor buddy got fired by me, let me hire him as a scout instead" type of crap.

So frustrated right now.

And yes Neo maybe disgusted was too harsh but I am annoyed by this greatly.

He's still getting paid. Might as well be doing something. It's up to his superiors to value his input accordingly. Who knows, he might just luck out on one prospect and actually be worth something.

Good, you can never have too much information on players. JM seems to be a really smart hockey guy, its just he isn't really motivating type when the team is struggling. I'm not sure why people think that JM doesn't seem to like "tough" players or players with size, I think that in his system of coaching, he rather have someone stay in position than go for a hit and be out of position. Heck JM two favourite players were Moen and Darche, 6'2 215, and 6'1 215.

Would it be better if JM was a pro scout? (Same question with Pearn)

JM is one of the smartest hockey minds ever. He'd be an asset to any organization in any capacity. It just wasn't working as coach, he was a terrible coach for the Habs.

I remember people saying Molson had to give him an extra million if he was fired before his 3rd year was up... maybe that'S the way they found to tell him "Here, you're now a scout, so we didn't completely break your contract" and not pay him that million? Maybe his input will have no value at all...

I could not care less either way, I think nothing will work (work RIGHT, as in bring in a contending team year in year out) until we actually clean house in the upstairs management team...GM needs to go, scouting team obviously need work, we need someone in the Q, someone in Sweden/Finland... I couldn't care less is RC speaks french or not, but I wish they'd let him chose his assistants and et him work.

This board is full of exageration and opverreaction.

1-Martin wasn't a bad coach, maybe not the right fit for the team but the guy obviously wasn't an idiot, he got the team in the playoffs and playing well when they got in with less than a full lineup each year.

2-the guy has been around hockey for like 40 years, I'm sure using his knowledge while you pay him a huge salary will benefit the organisation. He knows his stuff, was GM in Florida

Say what you will about JM but the guy knows his hockey, and he can assess a player's talent.

He's an excellent addition to our scouting staff. Great news.

I was in the Fire Martin Bandwagon, but this is great news & Good Management. Instead of paying him to do nothing, he's gonna be at least bringing some scouting reports to the table.
