That's what happens you get played out of a job, Niitty.

I don't think Nitty should be traded because he won't fetch anything worthy. He is a good goaltender, better than Greiss. Just make him work for his $2 million, and Greiss will take over next year.
You know nothing about goaltenders apparently... you don't sit your starting goalie 10 days, nor do you rotate 3. Please stop, Hye.

Although Id have to think Yzerman would be interested, I'm not sure Nitty has the trade value you guys assume he does. I'd be surprised to see a return of much more then a third round pick and at this point that might be a stretch.

Actually Nitty was our best goalie most of the start of last year until he went down with injury which left Nemo as our only real option, then he got hot and carried play down the stretch. Nitty hardly got played out of a job.

Look... any team picking Nitty up at this point would be taking a bit of a risk. Also paying a back up 2 million was never Wilson's three year plan...

Exactly and from what I remember he was solid in the playoffs too when he needed to backup Nemo.

Anyway the Sharks are loaded in goal. It is one area where they are perhaps the strongest. I don't think they need both Nitty and Niemi. And since they already chose Niemi, I'm pretty sure Nittys on his way out.

Keep holding on to Niittymaki's performance to start last season all you want but he's not that good. Niittymaki is a guy that provides short bursts of brilliance followed by huge bouts of inconsistencies and injuries. Even if he is marginally more talented or better as a goalie, he hasn't earned a spot reserved for him on the team. As good as Niittymaki was to start last season, he still ended the year with a sub .900 save percentage and didn't have a month where he finished over that mark after October.

I have to ask what you've been smoking to think that Niittymaki is something reliable as a goalie.

Actually, Im not smoking anything. The Sharks have no use for him at this point whatsoever and he's a back up at best. If Niemi gets injured, he's not going to be taking the Sharks where Greiss cant take them anyways. So why keep a 2 million dollar cancer on the team?

He might as well just retire before he plays a couple more mediocre games and injures himself again. His career is pretty much done IMO.

You still don't give the starting goalie 10 days off.

I'm giving him 3 days off. He's been playing non-stop.

Move him for a 3rd, but he's still better the Griess, he's just not 1.5m better then him.

To think, we signed him as our starter, Griess would have gotten a good work out due to injuries if Niemi didn't become available.

Uh, almost every time Niitty was given the start in the second half he blew it. Not to mention Greiss' great goaltending has given him the rightful reign of #2. I think that's what I would call getting played out of a job.

Niemi is a goalie that needs to play. Just like Nabby. If they sit, they play like ****. That's why Niemi sucked last year when he was splitting time with Niitty. Once Niitty was out and Niemi got full time, he showed that he was a good goalie. You make Niemi not play for 10 days, miss a couple of games, alternate Griess and Niitty, you're gonna wreck him. He needs to play. It's why Griess isn't playing when he normally would.

I don't think so at all. He needs to play around 50 games, no more.

I agree, I don't see why we overplay him so much so early. OK, he plays better when he sees a lot of ice time. Then give him a fair whack of starts towards the playoffs to get him in the swing, not burn him out in December.

And that's why I said you apparently don't know about goalie, despite watching Nabby the last some odd years and then Niemi last year who both got progressively better with the more games they played. Also, the team has 6 days off, not 7.

Goalies get better the more often they play. Rotating Niemi in any manner with the other goalies would be a big mistake.

Simply put, Niitty needs to be traded. He's too injury prone and is better served as bringing in other assets. Sharks can't have 3 goalies on the roster, having 2 of them sitting around not playing. It's already causing drama.

It makes sense that he's frustrated. There's pretty much nothing he can do to earn back ice time.

I'm not saying we should start him over Niemi or even Greiss, but to imply that last year he "played himself out of a job" when he only got 2 whole starts after going down with injury, is beyond absurd. If I were in his shoes I'd be frustrated too because both the playoff games he had to relieve Nemo in after Nemo gave up horrendous goals he played beyond expectations. But now there is no way for him to get back into rotation it seems.

I think DW needs to do right by Niitty and send him somewhere he can get a shot at a starting job. A 1 year contract shouldn't be that hard to move even if we only get small returns, though he may hold on till we approach the trade deadline to inflate his value some.

Where the hell are people getting the idea that Niittymaki is a competent goaltender? He's posted a SV% above 0.910 once in his NHL career. He hardly even belongs in this league.

Probably because our genius GM signed him to be our starting goaltender at one point. (He's never wrong about anything) And he played great for one month. I think.

He has infinite trade value too. Teams with 2 NHL goalies would be crazy to reject a trade with Niitty in it! Heck, lets trade Niemi instead cuz he lost us the game last night.
