McKeen's Sabres Top 10

So taking a que from the HMiC, here are the 1-10 rankings of Sabres prospects as put out by McKeen's Hockey compared to those put together by Kris (with imput from Ken and the random observation by yours truly ) for HF. There are some definite similarities...

McKeen's #1 - Ryan Miller

HF's #1 - Thomas Vanek

Perhaps the bloom is off the rose for many of us who've seen Miller up close as a very good but not yet dominating pro player. Vanek certainly hasn't had the same exposure yet that tends to take away the "new prospect smell" to paraphrase.

McKeen's # 2 - Thomas Vanek

HF's #2 - Ryan Miller

This is certainly a "well duh" moment. If Miller's #1, Vanek's #2 and vice versa, in almost everyone's mind. A bit of a no brainer IMO.

McKeen's #3 & HF's #3 - Derek Roy

No contest. :lol

McKeen's #4 - Drew Stafford

HF's #4 - Jason Pominville

McKeen's #5 - Jason Pominville

HF's #5 - Drew Stafford

Just like #1 and #2 with Vanek-Miller or Miller-Vanek, there isn't a lot to seperate the two. One is more ready and has taken more strides at the professional level. The other has the advantages of the infamous "untapped potential" as well as size.

McKeen's #6 - Dan Paille

HF's #6 - Daniel Paille

The "-iel" not withstanding, a pretty easy selection...

McKeen's # 7 - Clarke MacArthur

HF's #7 - Clarke MacArthur

Definitely on the rise from his draft day, a creative scorer-playmaker off the wing who could compliment the more robust guys like Vanek or Stafford or Paille and could compliment the smaller offensive catalysts like Roy or Pominville. Again an easy selection IMO.

McKeen's #8 - Paul Gaustad

HF's #8 - Milan Bartovic

McKeen's #9 - Milan Bartovic

HF's # 9 - Paul Gaustad

Seems to be a trend at this point, joining Vanek-Miller and Pominville-Stafford as a bit of a push pairing. I'm still very partial to the game Gaustad offers, which the Sabres have lacked since the half-dozen games Jeff Parker came to play----a big, hard hitting, useful grind line centre (or winger). And Bartovic, while not all that large, certainly fits the recent trend of more physically aggressive players that we see dotting the Sabres prospect list (along with others like PG, Thorburn, Paille, Fabry, Kaleta...). I suppose it comes down to size again, where the McKeen's crew has already show a preference with Stafford over Pominville.

McKeen's #10 - Chris Thorburn

HF's #10 - Chris Thorburn

I'm shocked. No, no really. Again, there isn't a lot to argue over the selection, though I could see Sekera or Fabry bumping him down (or him jumping over Gaustad and Bartovic to challenge Paille). Thorburn is a bit unheralded, but not only does he have the size and aggressiveness of a player like Gaustad, he's a better skater and IMO is a bit more creative offensively as well. With a solid year in Rochester, he could be forcing the issue.

Not much variation but enough certainly to show the variables offered to the top and second tier of Sabre prospects.

The prospects info is premium information, available along with the many other articles and updates from McKeen's for the low cost of $3.95 a month.
